Hello everyone.

I have a small problem. I just made a USB bootable stick with atiflash files and the new bios on it. However, everytime I execute the command "atiflash.exe" it launches the program and on the bottom it says "press any button to continue". So I can't type any command in the program. After 4 presses the program shuts down and I have to execute it again..

Any ideas how to execute a command line in atiflash? I have tried many thins, like "atiflash -f -p 0 black.bin", but the DOS booter says that it cant find the path..

Try renaming the bios file witha small filename like b1.bin and see if that helps.

I've encountered this problem when flashing an old Asus motherboard (could only be done through Dos), so I too created a bootable Dos flash-drive but the afudos (bios update utility) could never find the bios file and it was right next to the afudos.exe. It turned out to be a problem with large file names under dos (BiosFileNr1.bin sould be spelled like BIO~1.bin or something).

You don't quite understand my problem. The problem is that I cannot type a command "inside" atiflash.exe. As you can see on the bottom of the picture, it says "press any key to contunue" and if I press anything it just scrolls down to the next page of commands until the program exits itself.

um, guy... that is not a 'program', that is simply the Help screen showing you the command line options for atiflash.exe. The help screen has 3-4 pages and once you've scrolled through all of them you will be returned to the command prompt.

Read temp02's advice again and try it out.

To see what your filename is under DOS, type DIR

The command you are using is valid (although I would leave out the '-f').

Exactly what rake said, you can't type on the help screen.
After your flash drive has booted your will see something like this
Code:
Microsoft DOS
C>
It's here that your should write atiflash -f -p 0 black.bin and not after entering the program, the extra data after atiflash are parameters for the program.
Take a look at this tutorial.
Also make sure that you have the latest atiflash and that your bios file is 128KB in size and not 64, I remember some problems related to moding that card bios.

You're not supposed to type inside atiflash.exe. You're supposed to use command-line flags as it's a non-TSR.

Example to show all ATi cards installed on the system:
Code:
atiflash -i

Example to dump the BIOS from your primary card to a 128KB file named hd4770.bin:
Code:
atiflash -s 0 hd4770.bin 128092

Compare it with your original BIOS (using a program like RBE). If PowerPlay state 0 is the same, you should be OK for booting to DOS at least.

But, in all cases of vBIOS flashing, be prepared for the worst. In other words, it never hurts to have a PCI card and your boot disk handy.

Before you go flashing an OC'd vBIOS, why not test the capabilities of your card first by OC'ing with software utilities?

So now I fuc*ed up...

I forced flashed the XFX4890 Black Edition bios and now when my computer starts up i get this flashing red message:

"YOU HAVE NOT CONNECTED ONE OF YOUR VIDEO CARD POWER CONNECTORS TO THE POWER SUPPLY. PLEASE REFER TO 'GETTING STARTED' GUIDE FOR PROPPER HARDWARE INSTALATION."

I am sure that both of the power connectors are connected properly. I have a Corsair TX 750W power supply. Now what can I do?

So I've figured out what went wrong. The original XFX4890 has 2 6-pin power connectors. The Black Edition had one 6-pin and one 8-pin connector. I just have to re-flash it to original.

type DIR and make sure atiflash.exe is listed in the root of the drive you're on at the moment ( C: )

To change to a different drive, just type the drive letter e.g A:

So now I'm getting some error. Error 0FL01. And it says "file mybios.bin not found". And I am sure that those files are there.

Same thing: type DIR and look for your file name. It's easiest if atiflash and your vbios are located in the same directory, else you have to specify the full path.

Well duuh.. I just wonder how he flashed a XFX4890 to Black Edition - the BE uses 1x 6-pin and 1x 8-pin power connector.

And the ordinary XFX4890 uses 2x 6-pin connectors... so how did he plug more power into the ordinary flashed card?

***

Should I flash my bios with the MSI 4890 Cyclone SOC? It has 1GHz stock speed. And it has 2x 6-pin connectors, just like my XFX4890 so the power shouldn't be the problem.

Are the cards physically different (excluding the cooler)?

The BE cards have 6+8-pin power connector, as well as some other parts that distribute juice from that extra pair of wires. The bios does not work on 6+6 cards due to these physical components being missing.

Some cards have the 6+8pin power, and these bios-mod fine, assuming that the clocks are stable.

Otherwise, the XFX BE card is a reference design. MSI card is NOT.
