XP auto update thingy

ive been running XP for several months now without a fresh install and all has been well. as most people do i auto update running. today one of the auto updates came up and it wont go away. it says its installing but then pops back up and keeps installing it. ive rebooted and it still comes up saying it needs to update my machine. any ideas? i might just turn auto update off.

is it the same update? some take a while to install. also ms just released a bunch of them so it may take a while.

is it the dot net 3 thing?

if it is then use add/remove to uninstall all the dot net framework stuff you have, then reboot and load dot net 1, then load dot net 2 and reboot, then dot net 3 in that order.

something with net 3 needs net 1 and if you have net 2 installed it cant install net 1 because it is an earlier version and net 2 is a newer version so then it cant install net 3.

aint microsoft great!

I don't recommend Net framework 1 as it will require you to log in with the log in screen. I am the sole user of my rig and don't want to have to click the log in screen. I just want to hit the power button and get to my desktop. If you don't want the click to log in, then no Net. 1. At least for me, the log in will still be there even after dl' Net. 2 and 3, if Net. 1 was dl' first. So I never dl that Net framework 1 anymore.

GLD: you can delete the hidden user name for dotnet in the control panel, it shows up as a hidden account there, but its only for the purposes of those writing .net apps, not for end users.

Never had that problem myself GLD.

Usually I only go with Net 2.0, but some of my newer gaming peripherals required 1.1 ;/

I would have thought a quick fix for that login issue, was to just set it to auto login?
Mine goes so fast I can't even see the screen as it logs in. I just boot, wait five seconds, all black screen and I'm in Windows.

Rhino definatley try to pinpoint what the update package has in it please.

Those damn automatic updates have buggered my computer. :mad:

I;m going to have to reinstall- it won't boot at all. I should have disabled it.
Make sure you're firwall is off when it tries to install. Zonealarm always prevent NET changes for me.

I might be a bit of a hardass about autoupdates, but I've always snubbed my nose at them. Never once have I gotten data from an auto update in any Windows version.

well i uninstalled all the .net stuff. .net1, 2 and 3 and it still wants to autoupdate. this whole thing just started randomly. i changed nothing on my system. so as a result ive turned off autoupdates just to keep my sanity. perhaps ill try a fresh install this weekend. maybe it is a sign i should move on to vista. :slap:

Dont think any Windows version won't come without that nasty probing auto update feature.

I'm not sure why you have it on? As long as you have Service Pack 2 (and even that's debatable) you shouldn't need to get any Windows updates.

Though if you feel confident Vista will work for you, then ya, it's a good excuse to install that instead.

to get net 3 you will have to follow the steps i mentioned.

net 3 has some better security features so i would recommend finding time to update it.

you have to go to control panel/user accounts and then delete the dot net account there to solve the login thing.

you dont need a new install, if you removed dot net and then reinstalled dot net 1,2, & 3 then just let it update. it may take 7 or 8 tries but it will stop. it doesnt always register as updated and it loops sometimes trying to update something that is already updated.

go to my computer/ c drive and you will see the folders doc & settings, windows, program files,and a few others. if you see any folders there with just long numbers then they are the temporary windows update folders with the updates waiting to install, deleting them sometimes fixes update problems. they always self delete after updating so dont worry about deleting them.
