ok yesterday i formatted and done a clean install of windows xp, after loading up system drivers i went to ati and downloaded the latest cats and .net framework 2 after installation windows xp would boot up and instaed of going satraight into windows it would show my backgroiund picture but thats it, no task bar, start menu or icons on the desktop. ive actually formatted 3 times now and am getting wound up somthing bad.

does anyone have any ideas on what to do to resolve this cause at the minute i have no graphics drivers installed

Ati drivers are weird. Did you load the Cat package? If you did try the link to additional drivers and download the first two only for winXP. The WDM drivers are not compatable with my monitor and mess everything up every time. For my X1900XTX I onlu use the 6.9 Catalist and Net.messenger. No Media Center and No WDM drivers. Even though my puter is supposed to be a Media Center it turns out it is just Win XP w/a few media applications. Making the Media center drivers causing problems. Note about ATI driver downloads > They will search your HDD for existing drivers and reload from an unknown point within the old driver file and that never works. Add/remove >delete all ATI. Then use search to remove addditional markers and defrag before changing drivers. You don't need to re-format.

Have you installed any other software yet or just the cats? Could be a conflict, I know that I've had problems between BF2, ATI Drivers and GTK+. Try installing just the driver and not the CCC, then you don't need .Net framework and let us know what happens then.

Use the driver that last worked for you. Chances are the latest drivers didn't offer you any improvement anyway. No point in dealing with the frustration of trying to get them to work, you can try again when the next version comes out if you wish.

Re: Ati Help

You could download driver cleaner pro. Run that to remove all traces of the old driver. Then download and install the latest CATALYST drivers from ATI's website. That actually works pretty well and is a tried and true tested method. Good luck.

Driver Cleaner doesn't really catch anything that three formats would miss though :p

thanks for your help guys have sorted it now though, i thought it was .net framework confllicting with ati as i had similar symptoms a while back, although i seem to have sent everyone on a wild goose chase :o including me :nutkick:

turns out it was the latest bitcomet and changing the tcpip limit was somehow conflicting with windows and my internet connection, dont ask me how i found it out it took me 3 formats before i twigged, i just assumed it was ati or .net framework as id installed bit comet the same time as my ati drivers and it didnt occur until i restarted :banghead:

have now installed tcpip patch and dumped bitcomet (rip)
