SanDisk Announces ULLtraDIMM Design Win with Huawei

SanDisk Corporation, a global leader in flash storage solutions, today announced that its award-winning ULLtraDIMM Solid State Drive (SSD), has been selected by Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd for inclusion in its RH8100 V3 servers. Huawei selected the ULLtraDIMM SSD after extensive testing under a variety of enterprise workloads and end-user scenarios using the RH8100 V3 server, which demonstrated the ULLtraDIMM SSD achieved the industry's lowest write latency at less than five microseconds and offered bandwidth that topped that of any other SSD solution. Adding flash-based storage to the DDR memory bus with direct connection to the processor allows Huawei to deliver a powerful solution to help customers address growing data center application performance requirements without significant additional infrastructure investments.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980 and GTX 970 Pricing Revealed

Apparently, NVIDIA is convinced that it has a pair of winners on its hands, with its upcoming GeForce GTX 980 and GTX 970 graphics cards, and is preparing to price them steeply. The GeForce GTX 980 is expected to start at US $599, nearly the same price as the GeForce GTX 780 Ti. The GTX 970, on the other hand, will start at US $399, danger-close to cannibalizing the GTX 780.

Across the brands, the GTX 980 is launching at the same pricing AMD's Radeon R9 290X launched at; and the GTX 970 at that of the R9 290. AMD's cards have since settled down to $449 for the R9 290X, and R9 290 at $350. Both the GTX 980 and GTX 970, will be available in non-reference board designs, although reference-design GTX 980 will dominate day-one reviews. Based on the 28 nm GM204 silicon, the GTX 980 features 2,048 CUDA cores, 128 TMUs, 32 ROPs; while the GTX 970 features 1,664 CUDA cores, and 104 TMUs. NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980 Features Three DisplayPort Connectors: G-Sync Surround!

With its next-generation GeForce GTX 980 graphics card, NVIDIA has taken the initiative to help phase out DVI, the digital display connector that has had its reign since the dawn of flatscreen monitors. In its place, NVIDIA is promoting DisplayPort. A picture of the rear I/O shield of a GeForce GTX 980 graphics card reveals that the card features no less than five display connectors, a staggering three DisplayPorts, and one each of HDMI 2.0 and dual-link DVI (with analog/VGA pins for compatibility with D-Sub only monitors). The rear vent pattern has been revamped to triangles, so vents can be cut through in vacant spaces between the connectors, without compromising on the shield's structural rigidity. This pattern made its debut with the dual-GPU GeForce GTX TITAN-Z.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980 Specifications Detailed Some More

NVIDIA's next-generation flagship single-GPU graphics card, the GeForce GTX 980, will feature 2,048 CUDA cores, and not the previously thought of 1,920. These 2,048 will be spread across 16 Streaming Multiprocessor Maxwell (SMM) units. Its sibling, the GeForce GTX 970, in comparison, features 1,664 cores spread across 13 SMMs. The TDP of GTX 980 is rated at just around 175W, and that of the GTX 970 at 145W. In comparison, the GK104 silicon, on the GeForce GTX 770, is rated at 230W. The kicker? Both GM204 and GK104 are based on the same 28 nm silicon fab node. Both cards feature power inputs consisting of two 6-pin PCIe power connectors. NVIDIA is expected to launch the two, on the 19th of September, 2014.

VESA Releases DisplayPort 1.3 Standard, 4K at 120 Hz

The Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA) announced the release of the DisplayPort 1.3 audio / video (A/V) standard. An update to the widely used DisplayPort 1.2a standard, this latest version increases the maximum link bandwidth to 32.4 Gbps, with each of four lanes running at a link rate of 8.1 Gbps/lane-a 50% increase from the previous version of the DisplayPort standard. Allowing for transport overhead, DisplayPort's 32.4 Gbps combined link rate delivers 25.92 Gbps of uncompressed video data.

The increased bandwidth enables higher resolution monitors, including recently announced 5K monitors (with pixel resolutions of 5120 x 2880) using a single DisplayPort cable without the use of compression. It will also enable higher resolutions when driving multiple monitors through a single connection using DisplayPort's Multi-Stream feature, such as the use of two 4K UHD monitors, each with a pixel resolution of 3840 x 2160, when using VESA Coordinated Video Timing.

NVIDIA Readies GeForce GTX 960

It looks like GeForce GTX 980 and GTX 970 won't be the only Maxwell-based graphics cards NVIDIA plans to launch within the next 30 days. The company is readying a third SKU based on the chip, the GeForce GTX 960. The company's next sub-$300 graphics card, the GTX 960 will be launched some time in mid to late-October, 2014. The company's GTX 970 and GTX 980 will come out later this week (19th September), timed with the Game24 event. There's no word on the exact specs of the GTX 960.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980 Reference Board Pictured

Here are the first pictures of the reference-design GeForce GTX 980 graphics card. This gorgeous looking board is something to get used to, as it could be a while before we see non-reference boards for the GTX 980. Its smaller sibling, the GTX 970, could launch with non-reference design boards right off the bat. Outwardly, the GTX 980 looks exactly like a GeForce GTX 780 reference board, with NVIDIA's space-age cooling shroud.

The only difference here is a metal backplate decking up the card. This backplate isn't cooling anything, and traces reveal that the card is indeed holding just 8 memory chips, confirming its 256-bit wide GDDR5 memory interface. The GeForce GTX 980 is based on NVIDIA's new GM204 silicon, a derivative of the company's new "Maxwell" architecture, which made its debut with the GeForce GTX 750 Ti. The package of GM204 looks roughly as big as a GK104. The card draws power from a pair of 6-pin PCIe power connectors, and uses a 4+1 phase VRM to condition power.

How Intel Plans to Transition Between DDR3 and DDR4 for the Mainstream

The transition between DDR2 and DDR3 system memory types was slower than the one between DDR and DDR2. DDR3 made its mainstream debut with Intel's X38 and P35 Express platforms, at a time when the memory controller was still within the domain of a motherboard chipset, at least in Intel's case. The P35 supported both DDR2 and DDR3 memory types, and motherboard manufacturers made high-end products based on each of the two memory types, with some even supporting both.

Higher module prices posed a real, and higher latencies, posed a less real set of drawbacks to the initial adoption of DDR3. Those, coupled with the limited system bus bandwidth, to take advantage of DDR3. DDR3 only really took off with Nehalem, Intel's first processor with an integrated memory controller (IMC). An IMC, again in Intel's case, meant that the CPU came with memory I/O pins, and could only support one memory type - DDR3. Since then, DDR3 proliferated to the mainstream. Will the story repeat itself during the transition between DDR3 and the new DDR4 memory introduced alongside Intel's Core i7 "Haswell-E" HEDT platform? Not exactly.

Radeon R9 290X Sees Price Cuts

AMD is apparently working with its add-in board manufacturers and retailers to bring down prices of its flagship single-GPU graphics card, the Radeon R9 290X. The card can now be had for as low as $449, non-reference design, factory-overclocked cards starting at a $50 premium. Prices could settle down somewhere between $450 and $500. This closely follows AMD's move to bring down price of its dual-GPU flagship Radeon R9 295X2 by a whopping 34 percent, down to $999, offering performance competitive to the $2999 GeForce GTX TITAN-Z. NVIDIA is preparing two new graphics cards competitive in performance to the Radeon R9 290 series, the GeForce GTX 970 and GTX 980. The two are based on the company's new 28 nm "GM204" silicon, implementing the "Maxwell" GPU architecture.

EK Introduces ASUS Maximus VII Gene/Hero/Ranger MOSFET Water Blocks

EK Water Blocks, Ljubljana based premium water cooling gear manufacturer, is proud to introduce EK-MOSFET ASUS M7G - a new water block for water cooling of the power regulation (VRM / MOSFETs) module on ASUS Maximus VII Gene, VII Ranger and VII Hero.

Base of these water coolers is made of nickel plated electrolytic copper while the top is made of quality acrylic glass material or POM Acetal (depending on the variant). As an additional safety measure this product features pre-installed nickel-plated brass standoffs which prevent incorrect installation and utilizes ASUS factory provided backplates to maximize cooling performance. AMD Readies Radeon R9 390X to Take on GeForce GTX 980

It turns out that the big OEM design win liquid cooling solutions maker Asetek was bragging about, is the Radeon R9 390X, and the "undisclosed OEM" AMD. Pictures of a cooler shroud is doing rounds on Chinese tech forums, which reveals something that's similar in design to the Radeon R9 295X2, only designed for single-GPU. The shroud has its fan intake pushed to where it normally is for single-GPU cards; with cutouts for the PCIe power connectors, and a central one, through which liquid cooling tubes pass through.

One can also take a peek at the base-plate of the cooler, which will cool the VRM and memory under the fan's air-flow. The cooler design reveals that AMD wants its reference-design cards to sound quieter "at any cost," even if it means liquid cooling solutions that can be messy with multi-card CrossFire setups, and in systems that already use liquid-cooling for the CPU; and leave it to AIB partners to come up with air-cooled cards, with meatier heatsinks. Other specs of the R9 390X are unknown, as is launch date. It could be based on a member of the "Pirate Islands" family of GPUs, of which the new "Tonga" GPU driving the R9 285 is a part of. A possible codename of AMD's big chip from this family is "Fiji."
