Mushkin Readies Copperhead Series Memory Kits

Mushkin is readying a new series of PC memory kits named Copperhead. The series circles around a new heatspreader design that heavily makes use of copper, to enhance its thermal characteristics. The company has in the the past worked on similar heatspreader innovations including a vapor-chamber technology based Ascent series. Considering that copper is an expensive (if not precious) metal, these kits could be positioned in the higher-end category, consisting of triple-channel and dual-channel DDR3 memory kits. Owing to its still sizable market, DDR2 kits in the series cannot be written off at this point. Expect product launches very soon.

I agree. Buggalugs, unless its the due product of photoshop, copper does not look like bronze or gold. Copper is a bright, pinkish brownish colour and corrodes very well :laugh:. Copper is used so extensively that I wouldn't really call it precious. Moreover for passive use Aluminium seems to be a better choice.

From which time copper as such is expensive and rare? xD I got few kilos of various crap in my basement made from pure copper. They cost nothing.
Of course, other thing is, copper used in high-end tech, which is finely processed, gritted, and bla bla bla.

copper is a bitch to machine, and is fairly expensive compared to other materials, its heavy weight adds quite a bit of cost in shipping logistics.

and my sources confirm that it is copper indeed on the heatspreader.

You should see 100-120 kg copper radiators in Soviet built houses. Damn that thing is heavy. :D

Copper is starting to become more rare than you think. There's a reason why, around where I live, people break into houses just to steal the copper pipes to sell for scrap. :shadedshu

I'd like to see a "helicoptor-view". From these pics it looks like the heatspreaders are very wide... wide enough to block the second slot.

I really like Mushkin Ram, but I can't see paying extra for fancy heatspreaders, especially with DDR3. They simply do not get that hot. If the price point is similar to non copperhead sticks, then yeah...they look nice, and I'd consider them.

Copper....I worked at a copper/zinc mine and at the metallurgical refining plant (xstrata copper - kidd division). Copper is a very common element and is a base metal. Last I checked it was worth about $2.75 CND per pound, however it may have changed since then, probably worth less now. It is a bitch to machine, but pure aluminum is probably just as bad, but they are both easy to extrude, and copper heatsinks are easily made by using powered metal and applying force to a mold...etc etc
