XFX Radeon HD 5970 Black Edition 4 GB Retail Card and Packaging Pictured

Seen on numerous occasions and teaser videos as in either its prototype form or just plain CGI drawings, XFX seems to have finally made a working, ready for release iteration of its HD 5970 Black Edition 4 GB graphics card in its wacky retail packaging, which it hype-marketed through teaser videos. TweakPC got to lay its hands on one of these limited edition packages, and went ahead un"boxing" it. The package is actually a bag meant to carry small sniper-rifles (good luck getting it through customs). Inside, the actual graphics card is enclosed inside a case shaped somewhat like a Belgian P90 submachine gun. If that wasn't enough, the magazine pockets on the bag contain accessory boxes that look like magazines.

The card itself has a redesigned cooling assembly, that looks different from what the first iteration looked like. It has grooves on its top, and a badge with a limited edition serial number. Internally, the GPUs are pushed far apart, each has its own heatsink. The fan is located in the middle, it blows air to those heatsinks located on either sides. Power is drawn in from two 8-pin PCI-E power connectors. Display connectivity includes 6 mini-DP (DVI adapters included), supporting Eyefinity6. Each GPU carries the same clock profiles as the Radeon HD 5870, 850 MHz core, 1200 MHz (4800 MHz effective) memory, but addresses 2 GB of memory each. XFX seems to have commenced selling, expect it to be priced over $1000.

Pictures of the card follow.

They need to get rid of the (IMO) stupid gun case and bag. Lower the price. Right now this card costs as much as the ASUS 5870x2 which is a much faster card.

pantherx12I can't believe something so expensive and limited edition only has a 2 year warranty : /
Which is another reason i would not touch it as it only says to me is they cannot stand behind their product.

Except that I cannot buy ARES, on it's own. This card, I can. I love how the newegg deal basically give the XFX 850w PSU for free...should give a good idea as to how much Newegg is marking this card up.

True, But you can always get the 4GB from Sapphire. (Not the Toxic one)

Makes me wish I won the lottery to get this.

4GB I assume it's 2GB per GPU so effectively only 2GB vram is used. That'd be only a 1GB improvement over the 'mainstream' 5970 which is marketed as a 2GB card..

It's way too expensive, alas I'm not 1337 enough to get one

I feel like this is too little too late from XFX... ARES and the sapphire Toxic version (my personal fav) have been out for months now... not to mention the extra memory is next to useless, and stock 5970's will easily (in most cases) hit these speeds.

I'd say they could be record setters but I'm pretty sure tri GTX480's have broken most of the records that CFX 5970's have set.

Let me get 2 of these and whatever NVidia calls the dual 480 card for Physx so like Solaris, I can get 35fps on WTF high in Crysis.

Lame case and bag. A DeWalt style case would be much better.

Only if XFX released this a little earlier. I was waiting to upgrade my 2x 5970 Black Edition 2GB cards to 2 of these 4GB ones. Though i already upgraded to the 4GB Sapphire (Non-Toxic). XFX could have had some good business if they released these cards earlier. Now no one is going to buy them as the 6xxx series is just a few months away. :/
