With the socket AM3+ platform, ASUS wants to rally around its top motherboard brands, including Republic of Gamers (ROG), with the ASUS Crosshair V Formula, and the The Ultimate Force (TUF) Sabertooth 990FX, for AMD's next top of the line 990FX chipset that is designed to run up to four discrete graphics cards. The 990FX Sabertooth keeps up with the color scheme of the other TUF-series members. It boasts of highly durable components. The AM3+ socket is powered by a 10-phase Digi+ VRM. It is wired to four DDR3 DIMM slots supporting dual-channel DDR3-1866 MHz memory, and connects to the 990FX chipset over a HyperTransport 3.1 link.

Expansion slots include four PCI-Express 2.0 x16 (configurable as x16/x4/x8/x8, x16/x4/x16/NC, depending on how they're populated); The electrical x4 slot is wired to the SB950 southbridge, and is placed there to hold PCI-Express SSDs. One each of PCI-E x1 and PCI make for the rest of the expansion. Storage connectivity includes six internal SATA 6 Gb/s ports supporting RAID, two internal SATA 3 Gb/s from a third-party controller, one power-eSATA/USB combo, and one normal eSATA on the rear panel.

Other connectivity features include 8+2 channel HD audio driven by Realtek ALC892 with optical SPDIF output, one gigabit Ethernet connection, four USB 3.0 ports (two rear, two by header), a number of USB 2.0 ports, and Firewire. The 990FX supports a number of ASUS-exclusive features including UEFI BIOS with EZMode, MemOK, Ceram!x heatsinks, etc.

The usual Sabertooth board: isn't the best looking, but will prob. be very reliable and have good VRM. What I do find interesting is Asus ditching the Thermal Armor from the P67 Sabertooth.

Whats the difference between the formula, ROG and the sabertooth?
ROG is the branding for the high-end ASUS products. One such products will be the Crosshair V Formula (maybe even a Crosshair V Extreme). As for the difference, the Crosshair V will have an Intel NIC (stupid call, as they put an Intel NIC on the Crosshair IV Extreme and caused nothing but problems), and two more USB 3.0 ports. The ROG boards will also have the optional card that has a combo Realtek X-Fi (not real X-Fi) and Killer NIC. I'm thinking I may go back to Gigabyte this time around, as ASUS just doesn't seem to understand that the ATX spec allows for 7 ATX slots.

So if all sockets AM3b will be black, that should be simple than if CPU bottom will be the same color, than you can't miss it when new socket comes out  Nice colors on the RAM and slots, it looks like ice cream.

So no x8/x8/x8/x8 pci-e for quad xfire? I know most would use the x2 gpu cards but I think there are ppl that would like to run 4 of the high end single gpu cards. Aside from that looks like a great board Btw srry if there's any odd spacing... Posting on an old BB 8310 w/ Opera Mini 4

Nice board, not a huge fan of the color scheme though. I'd rather wait for the Crosshair V.(though it might be expensive)

What's the benefit of the Intel LAN on the CH5 over the Realtek LAN on all the other boards? Also Intel chip set on an AMD board??
