AMD Rushes Out Catalyst Rage Performance Driver

AMD introduced a special BETA Catalyst driver for AMD Radeon graphics processors, that improves performance on the latest title from FPS pioneer id Software, Rage. Bluntly called the "Catalyst Rage Performance Driver", this driver has been rushed in by AMD to address performance issues. It provides "signifacant performance gains" for Rage in both single GPU and CrossFire configurations. The improvements are effective only on Radeon HD 5000 series and Radeon HD 6000 series graphics processors, and is available only for Windows 7.

Nice that they want us to have some decent drivers to play new games. but i have heard of people having no end of problems with their rushed BF3 beta drivers.

Infact. most people that I know who are playing the beta didnt even bother switching from their Cat 11.8's. its only recently that some have updated to Cat 11.9 but not the cat 11.10 Preview drivers for BF3.

I would rather play with shit performance then run with buggy drivers that will cause all sorts of graphical anomalies, CTDs and BSODs until they do a proper release that they havent rushed through QA at gun point.

There is a reason why they are called BETA drivers.

Not a huge surprise, especially after last week seen BF3 drivers and that was only for BF3 beta, not even a released game. If a huge title is seeing bad performance and it's not completely on the developer side, then AMD and NV had to crank out a set of drivers, they don't want the competition looking better.

No -- they are called PREVIEW drivers. BETA is what BF3 is and what people are currently playing

Good! You know the difference between the word preview and beta.

The news post says they are beta drivers. You should read it sometime.

RecusThe game is out?
Yes and it's not optimized for PC. Supposedly people have been having more then normal issues with AMD cards/drivers with Rage.

New Rage driver with proper OGL component will be posted later today

All - don't use the current Rage performance driver - package includes very old OGL files, that's why you're seeing corruption etc.

did they blindfold and frog march the QA team out the back door and put them in front of a firing squad or something???

At least it's reassuring to know they have the graphic card folk (with AE) are work on it, to help AE through their Beta issues.

You guys should be glad that it takes less than 3 months for AMD / NVidia to give a damn about drivers and hardware for any game or even for them to look at trying to fix anything.

We are being spoiled, just a short while ago you could not even get AMD / NVidia to make a working driver.

BF3 driver is understandable they only tested with the beta of BF3 so you will have to wait for the actual full game used as base for the drivers to get real fixes.
AMD / NVidia is trying to play catch up from the BF3 beta.

The other side is quality control, AMD / NVidia using a already modded pc with custom settings to add and test the beta drivers on and giving incorrect results instead of stock / clean installed pc + the game and their beta drivers to get a real feel for what is going on.

Same goes for gamers testing this beta driver, you can not start form a contaminated machine, uninstall the drivers properly then re-install the beta drivers and get a real sense for what is going on instead of posting bogus bugs from a contaminated machine and contaminated profiles.

Either way thank G* that they now give a damn about their drivers, it is a miracle.

Hardly true. If they didnt give a damn. about hardware for any game. then they wouldnt be in the business of making hardware like graphics cards and motherboards.
and AMD/Nvidia wouldnt pay to have their logos & slogans advertised in a game.

Nvidia has quite often payed a lot of money to devs to make games more 'optimised' for their graphic cards. AMD probably does the same, but on a much lesser scale.

It is obvious they care. So what if fixes for games sometimes come much later then expected? I few months ago AMD released drivers that had fixes for Company of heroes. the game has been out for a long time, but still better late then never

Im sorry for the problems you are having with AMD/Nvidia drivers but,
Ive never had a 'not working' driver from AMD. I cant even remember the last time I had major issues with their drivers. but i tend to stay away from beta or preview drivers and wait for the official drivers that are WHQL signed and have been through QA and not fast-tracked/rushed through.

BF3 beta has its own problems. Beta drivers have their own. Im sure AMD/Nvidia had access to the game a lot lot earlier then most people did so they could test their drivers out and make sure everything performs well. Unfortunately, rushing causes mistakes. same thing can be said about running with a pair of sharp scissors or a knife in your hand/pocket etc etc etc.

So you automaticaly assume that no one here knows how to install/uninstall new drivers properly and just like the AMD/Nvidia driver team, are utterly useless and totally incapable of using a program such as driver sweeper? and we just like to bitch and moan about everything.

Bugged drivers are bugged, no amount of rainbows, pixie dust and dancing Leprechauns are going to unbug them unless AMD/Nvidia release a fix or find the bugs just in time.
WarraWarraEither way thank G* that they now give a damn about their drivers, it is a miracle.
Theyve always given a damn unlike some companies (Asus soundcard dept and Creative come to mind) but you've just been too dumb to notice it.

---------

my Cat 11.9's work just fine with BF3 and any game i play without any CTDs or BSODs thank you very much.

Good thing their cards are not called Rage anymore.. "Rage enrage Rage ragers"

I always hear this conspiracy theory, but there is hardly any evidence that shows it. Afaik, they only do free tecnhical support on how to make the most out of geforce cards.

Is this the "new" version of that Rage driver? Last night they had one out too that made things 10x worse.
