Vioguard Intros Self-Sanitizing Keyboard

Cyber cafés can be a nightmare for anyone hygiene-conscious, as the keyboards and mice are shared-surfaces. With every press of a key, you could come in contact with germs like turning or pushing a doorknob. One way to keep yourself clean is with instant hand sanitizer gels. A company turned the concept around, by introducing a keyboard that sanitizes itself after each user session. The device is cleared by even the US FDA.

After each user session, the keyboard pulls itself into its sanitizer dock (like an optical drive tray), where it's bathed in intense germicidal ultraviolet light (UV-C), which is a proven germicide against flu viruses, MRSA (a highly resilient kind of bacteria pathogen), and various other bacteria and viruses. Once sanitized, the keyboard is ejected out for the next user session. The keyboard itself is a combo input device with a compact keyboard, a multitouch trackpad, and a fingerprint reader. More details are awaited.

This seems like it would be great for hospitals, schools, pretty much anywhere that keyboard is going to be used by many different people.
HossHugeKeyboards 'dirtier than a toilet'

When's the last time you cleaned your keyboard?

Time for a poll?
Actually not a bad idea for a poll. I occasionally give my keyboard a blast with the air-duster, but that's about it. Once, I took the whole thing apart to clean out everything under the keys. I've never actually "cleaned" it for sanitation purposes though.

i clean mine with an air compressor monthly, and i wipe down the keyboards at work (about 10 systems) daily.

this system seems odd, but personally i'm all for it being used in hospitals, reception areas, etc.

You're missing the point. Single users are not the target market here. The target market is places where many different people share the same workstations. In such an environment, it is important to prevent the spread of germs so people don't spread colds and such. Just because you might not be filthy, doesn't mean the person who used that keyboard before you wasn't a complete slob that never washes their hands after using the restroom, etc.

This is a good idea for internet cafe's as it mentions. Considering it is cleared by the FDA it will probably find its way to food processing facilities as well. A smart idea for its intended purpose.

The first thing I do at work when I start is wipe down the phone, keyboard, and mouse. Sure killing too many germs is bad for you, but those are 3 extremely nasty areas.

I can hear it now.. "Did you wash your hands before you came out of the computer room? How did you use the computer room with out touching the keyboard!.. Now go wash your hands young man!"... hehehehe

Oh and I know a few users that could use a system like this....

dirt is good for you... it helps to keep your immune system strong!

Also, when using UVC sterilizers you need to replace the UV bulb every couple of months for it to be effective. I know as I run them in some of my fishtanks.
Interestingly too is the fact that the tanks with the UVC sterilizers have fish that are more suceptible to disease (like when i need to change the bulb i get an outbreak of whitespot or velvet).

See now I agree with this . All these germ freaks out there wiping there hands 24/7 with antibiotic anti-germ hand wash is creating new stronger germs ! I do not do this . I want my immune system to work and work hard ! I wash my keyboard off once every 6 months but no one else uses it .
