Alienware Launches X51 Ultra-Compact Gaming Desktop

If gaming-console manufacturers want to stifle innovation in the gaming industry with old, archaic hardware, it's time for game PC vendors to do something to woo the console crowd. Dell's flagship gaming PC brand, Alienware, announced the X51, a gaming desktop built around the size of a typical gaming console, but packing today's computing technologies that PC gamers have access to. It starts at US $699. Its chassis measures 343 x 95 x 318 mm (HxWxD), and can be oriented vertically, or horizontally. It features cutting-edge styling by Alienware with dashes of piano black, matte black, and lime. Its front features audio, USB ports, and a slot-in DVD-RW / Blu-ray ROM (optional).

The $699 base model is driven by an Intel Core i3 dual-core processor, though more powerful Core i5 and Core i7 processors can be opted for. Graphics is handled by NVIDIA GeForce GT 545, though GT 555 can be opted for. 4 GB of dual-channel DDR3 memory comes standard, up to 8 GB can be opted for. 1 TB 7200rpm HDD storage comes out of the box, faster SSDs can be opted for. Connectivity includes 7.1-channel HD audio with Waves MAXX Audio Software, gigabit Ethernet, Wireless b/g/n, optical and coaxial SPDIF audio outputs. The graphics card gives out HDMI and DVI outputs. Yes, it can run Crysis.

Utter shit, how can something so large settle for such a weak gpu?

I would consider that GPU acceptable on something mac mini sized, but this virtually needs as much room as a full size pc.

Also how can Dell expect the Alienware brand to be taken seriously as their gaming platform with shit like this?

GT 545 is a weak GPU? Compared to a console whose GPU is barely the same as a 7900GTX, it's hardly weak at all.

Sure size matters a bit to consolers looking to have a lan party, but it the grand scheme, I don't think it matters as much as them wanting to just put in the game and play, maybe if they teamed up with onlive or something and offered a discount on the first few games purchased, and maybe included a controller with the thing, then I could see it selling better.

Irrelevant, unless somehow you know of a way to play PS3/360 games on a PC.

For a Gaming PC, it's a pitifully weak laptop class GPU.

The bottom range X51 can power Battlefield 3 in 1080p at an average of 32 frames-per-second, with high resolution textures, 4x aniostropic filtering and medium anti-aliasing turned on.

The top-end X51 can power Battlefield 3 running the same settings at an average of 54 frames-per-second.

Bitch plz... No amount of $3000 PC's are going to 'woo' potential customers if the best games the market has to offer are console ports like call of duty. If you want more business then try influencing devs to make. Better games that makes use of all that sexy hardware under the hood

Agreed, for a gaming PC it's weak. Especially considering the myriads of gaming PCs with the same form factor. Oh wait.

Also, since when did the GT 545 become a laptop class GPU?

this is an attempt to bring pc gaming to the masses,,, dont knock it.....either recommend it or help 'em build their own....

as a community every pc we gain with one console lost is one step closer to better gaming
