The whole ipad3 high res screen is so stupid. The GPU won't even be able to handle it when the games and apps take advantage to the ridiculously high res. Tegra III is still winning in benchmarks. Id take the Transformer Prime any day of the work for this thing. Price/Performance of it is win.

Actually the iPad 2 had more GPU performance than it could actually utilize. 1024x768 is a ridiculously low resolution by today's standards. Hell I havn't run anything that low since the 90s when I was sneaking into my brother's room to play Unreal on his Voodoo 2 SLI system. Hell by 2000 if you had a big enough budget you could run 1600x1200. By 2002 when we had the mighty ATI Radeon 9700 series launch high res gaming was easy. It is only recently that game engine technology has caught up and things slumped that GPU tech had to catch up, and advanced physics, open worlds, sandbox gaming, and all that massive online gaming stuff made things more complex.

I bought the iPad 3 on the 16th and have been enjoying games on it just fine, several games have already been updated to take advantage of the higher resolution display and Epic is launching new titles designed from the ground up to utilize the power of the SGX543MP4 "quad core graphics", along with a few other companies.

*edit*

And the high res stuff is not just about games. The pixel density makes everything better, text is far clearer and much easier on the eyes. I find it a lot easier to read for extended periods of time. Photos are clearer as well, and the new display seems have better color accuracy. Resolution is king, the higher the better and that is just fact :p It is high time TVs catch up and we get something better than 1080P to watch. In fact I am getting pretty bored with 2560x1440 as well for gaming on my pc, wheres my 4K damn it!

Anandtech just posted a great article about the new iPad 3 display here: Anandtech

I vow never to own an apple product, but for those that do, it's the entertainment factor... and being part of the crowd. That's how I understand it. That and a BIG 'ole HORSE BLINDER

slamming a tablet is kind of like someone criticizing a laptop for not being as powerful as a desktop computer and not having a 23" screen and a mouse. use a tablet for a while and you will see the usefulness of it.

the ipod/iphone and now ipad screen is so superior to the average LCD it's embarrassing. Apple is forcing everyone else to up their game. Personally i couldn't live without my ipod touch (and apps).

For a handheld device, it is a damn fine resolution.

You'll never understand because you never embrace the Light! Follow the teachings of the Sacred Word of the Holy Apple, and then you will know. Allow yourself to be enlightened, and your doubts would be gone.

Well, then, I'm surprised you don't have one yet, Young Shaver. But, it would be one more thing you'd have to pick up before the cleaning lady came:laugh:

Well first of all it is only expensive if you consider it expensive. nt300, your PC easily cost more than an iPad if bought retail when they were the newest parts, same can be said for nvidiaintelftw. The average price of a laptop easily tops $500, and most 10 inch tablets are $400-$500 when featuring a quality screen, dual core chip, decent graphics, and other desirable specs. So it's not as if Apple is picking numbers out of a Scrabble bag, if Asus thinks the Transformer Prime is only worth $300, or Samsung thinks the Galaxy Tab should only be $200, then why are they both selling them dollar for dollar at the exact same price as the iPad? There is no $399 Transformer Prime, the new model starts at $499 just like the iPad. Only now Apple sells the iPad 2 at $399.

But the real deal breaker is the knowledge that Asus has already made it clear that they ARE releasing a new Transformer Prime Infinity version that uses a better screen to compete directly with the iPad 3. They are going to be pushing 1920x1200 as the resolution on the new unit, and prices are expected to jump upward another $100, maybe more.

So if you think the iPad is too expensive, well then you'll hate that the BEST competition for it and arguably the only tablet on the market that would compete head to head, will be starting at $599-$699 for the WIFI versions, $100 more than the iPad prices.

Tablets are not useless, Android or iOS. They are not toys and they are not overpriced, but at the same time they are not for everyone. If you're not willing to take the plunge and try one then its not really fair to judge them. It's one thing to pick one up in best buy and say "Well this is shit" but it's something else entirely to use one every day for business, entertainment, and content creation and realize how much better things are using a tablet device than they were using a laptop. These are not toys, stop pretending otherwise just because you don't understand or dislike them - what ever the case may be.
