AMD Reports Second Quarter Results

AMD (NYSE:AMD) today announced revenue for the second quarter of 2012 of $1.41 billion, net income of $37 million, or $0.05 per share, and operating income of $77 million. The company reported non-GAAP net income of $46 million, or $0.06 per share, and non-GAAP operating income of $86 million.

"Overall weakness in the global economy, softer consumer spending and lower channel demand for our desktop processors in China and Europe made the closing weeks of the quarter challenging," said Rory Read, AMD president and CEO. "We are taking definitive steps to improve our performance and correct the issues within our control as we expect headwinds will continue in the third quarter as the industry sets a new baseline. We remain optimistic about our core businesses as well as future opportunities with our competitively differentiated next-generation Accelerated Processor Units (APUs). Our recently launched Trinity APU continues to gain traction with customers. We are committed to driving profitable growth."
Quarterly Summary
  • Gross margin was 45 percent.
    o Non-GAAP gross margin was 46 percent, flat sequentially.
  • Cash, cash equivalents and marketable securities balance, including long-term marketable securities, were $1.76 billion at the end of the quarter.
  • Computing Solutions segment revenue decreased 13 percent sequentially and year-over-year. The sequential decrease was driven primarily by lower desktop channel sales in China and Europe as well as a weaker consumer buying environment impacting sales to Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs).
    o Operating income was $82 million, compared with $124 million in Q112 and $142 million in Q211.
    o Microprocessor ASP decreased sequentially and year-over-year.
    o AMD expanded its notebook offerings with a top-to-bottom refresh of its mobile APUs. Systems powered by the new APUs are available from leading global computer manufacturers including HP, Lenovo, Samsung, Toshiba, ASUS and Acer.
    i The second generation AMD A-Series APU for notebooks, formerly codenamed "Trinity," enables up to 12 hours of battery life2 and twice the performance-per-watt3 over the previous generation A-Series and won a 2012 Best Choice Award at Computex.
    ii The 2012 AMD E-Series APU, formerly codenamed "Brazos 2.0," is designed for essential notebooks and enables up to 11 hours of battery life4 and best-in-class entertainment and media experiences.
    iii HP and Samsung were the first to bring ultrathin notebooks to mainstream price points based on the 17-watt second generation A-Series APUs. Several more AMD APU-based ultrathin designs are expected to launch in the second half of 2012, aligned with the Microsoft Windows 8 introduction.
    o AMD held the second annual AMD Fusion Developer Summit (AFDS), announcing several strategic partnerships designed to accelerate software innovation.
    i AMD joined forces with industry-leaders ARM, Imagination Technologies, MediaTek and Texas Instruments to form the HSA Foundation, a non-profit consortium established to define and promote an open standards-based approach to heterogeneous computing.
    ii AMD announced a strategic technology partnership with ARM to help drive the further adoption of an open, end-to-end security ecosystem based on the world's most broadly-adopted mobile security ecosystem. AMD plans to integrate ARM TrustZone technology into future products.
    o In addition to powering 24 of the world's top 100 supercomputers on the most recent Top500 Supercomputers list, AMD was awarded $12.6 million for processor and memory research as part of the U.S. Department of Energy's Extreme-Scale Computing Research and Development Program.
  • Graphics segment revenue was down sequentially and remained flat year-over-year. GPU revenue was down 5 percent in a seasonally down quarter, due to lower unit shipments in the channel.
    o Operating income was $31 million, compared with $34 million in Q112 and operating loss of $7 million in Q211.
    o GPU ASP was flat sequentially and up year-over-year.
    o AMD continued to expand its industry-leading graphics solutions:
    i Recapturing the graphics performance leadership position with the launch of the AMD Radeon HD 7970 GHz Edition. The AMD Radeon HD 7970 GHz Edition uses AMD's innovative Graphics Core Next (GCN) architecture to deliver strong performance and image quality5,6, providing world-class gameplay at the highest resolutions in the most demanding games;
    ii Launching the AMD FirePro W600, the first professional graphics solution to feature the GCN architecture and the industry's first graphics card to support six displays with independent audio streams;
    iii Bringing to market a full line of mobile discrete graphics based on the company's acclaimed GCN architecture, which includes the AMD Radeon HD 7900M, HD 7800M, and HD 7700M Series GPUs.7 New to the AMD Radeon HD 7000M Series is AMD Enduro technology8, which automatically switches between integrated graphics and the AMD Radeon discrete GPU depending on system or application requirements - helping to maximize battery life without having to compromise performance. Based on the latest 28nm process technology, and fully equipped with DirectX 11.1 support, the AMD Radeon HD 7000M Series of GPUs represent the most feature-rich mobile graphics chips since the company introduced its mobile product line.9

AMD expects revenue to decrease 1 percent, plus or minus 3 percent, sequentially for the third quarter of 2012.

Not Bad! Considering their CPUs suck and PC discrete graphics chips sales are are pretty low, thanks to the almost-dead state of PC gaming.

What has that got to do with anything? Generally speaking Ipod and Macs suck, but Apples revenue is always good.

You need to disconnect yourself from bad products and the ability to make profit as the two are not always mutually exclusive.

Also pc gaming is far from dead. Didn't Diablo III sale 4 million copies in 24hrs? Infact PC sales are up 230%, console sales are down 28%.

That's not a fair statement.
It's obvious that Blizzard (D3) and Bethesda (Skyrim) and all the other developers/publishers whose PC games are selling in the millions of units never got the notice that PC gaming was dead.

Forum trolls have been saying PC gaming is dead for years. I've always disagreed. It drops off a bit when the lastest console is launched, but always comes back stronger than ever.

AMD's processors don't suck.
While they compete with Intel you can't compare the two as Intel spends more in R&D in a quarter than AMD makes in a year, or two, or three.
There is more to the processor market than benchmark scores.

Their graphics division is flat but given the current economy that's not too much of a surprise.

IMO, AMD needs a massive advertising campaign ... but that costs money too.

Server and non-rigged software (ie linux results) says otherwise about not being competitive.

It's actually incredibly embarrassing for intel, but that's why they spend billions in marketing. You can make people believe whatever you want.

AMD's area is quickly shrinking tho, and Intel isn't forced into making another C2D.
Look at the prices of GPU's it's ridiculous (however, the price cuts are coming)...

Yet they have to make money ??? I said this after the APU`s hit We are seeing a CPU manufacture turning INTO A GPU one.If they had not released the 7000 at $599 4 months before the 680 from Nvidia and expected them to be #1 in the gpu market it would be a different story.

Tahiti is a competitive product and it's priced accordingly. Why should have it been sold for less? Less means low margins and profits would not have looked so good. It's a balancing act, sell less for more, get a good Profit per product at a good cost and less work or sell more for less, with less Profit per product, higher costs and more work. In the end they would have reached the same level, either way, just one of those ways would have been more complicated.

The problem with AMD is that they didn't plan for Tahiti enough... especially on the clock side with the GHz editions, it looks like a weak attempt at marketing and it also leaves older customers standing. It would have been better to release a BIOS update or something that would put all cards sold at a good level. This would increase the trust in their products and eventually would get more market-share.

no the problem with amd is that they priced their new gen card according to the 6000 series price performance curve, therefore not many invested into buying the new gen gpu, pricing high doesnt always mean profit, if they made twice the sales for 30% less profit they still gain more money. but im assuming supply is the reason that didnt happen.
Dent1Ipod and Macintosh has always sucked even before AMD employees started working for Apple. Yet Apples revenue was always reasonably good.
idk were your getting your information from, one can argue apple is overpriced, but to say macintosh sucks? im yet to see a software engineer or developer that has anything negative to say about mac os. if windows didnt have all the market share and software support it wouldnt be any appealing.
and from the hardware side apple always has the newest and best hardware in the market+much better screen resolutions +by far the most stylish designs. they sure are overpriced but to say they suck is an overstatement(unless you mean they suck for the price, but again you pay for the premium hardware and design).
as for ipods sucking? what exactly do you mean? its an mp3 player lol, and when it came out it had by far the best user interface than any of the mp3 players back then, and it looked by far better than anything on the market back then, and it had large storage capacities far bigger or atleast very competitive to anything back then.
so you say apple sucks? no they dont, exactly why they sell alot. because they know what the customer wants, and they know how to design, and they know how to advertise.

but as amd is concerned, its hard to compare it with apple, because amd is a chip manufacturer, and not a hardware one, so it has to appeal to OEMs rather than regular everyday customers. and its obvious OEMs are nerdy enough to know about performance so the "its fast enough" arguement doesnt work with them much. the only way for AMD to compete in the way apple did is if they start their own hardware manufacturing, and build AMD rigs/laptops that completely take advantage of their strength because OEMs are total idiots that dont undestand "you dont need to have the fastest performance to appeal". they keep using amd apus for their cheap solutions when they are clearly superior to intel in multimedia, so if they were to design stylish laptops with good sound and screen resolution, backlit keyboards, and more eye candy goodies they will sell just fine even if they are priced the same as an intel laptop+nvidia graphics(that is cheaply built)
