Crucial v4 SSD Improves Performance of Mainstream Computers at an Affordable Price

Crucial, a leading global brand of memory and storage upgrades, today introduced the Crucial v4 Solid State Drive (SSD), designed to deliver substantial yet affordable performance gains for mainstream SATA 2 (3 Gb/s) systems, the primary performance capability of computers purchased before 2011. Available in 32 GB, 64 GB, 128 GB, and 256 GB capacities with MSRPs of $49.99, $69.99, $99.99, and $189.99 respectively, the Crucial v4 SSD can be purchased now through select global channel partners, or direct through www.crucial.com.

The Crucial v4 SSD offers read speeds up to 230 MB/s and write speeds up to 190 MB/s, enabling faster startup times, faster application downloads, faster transfer data speeds, and increased reliability compared to traditional hard drives. The v4 SSD joins the m4 SSD and Adrenaline Solid State Cache Solution to round out the award-winning Crucial SSD portfolio.

"The Crucial v4 SSD boils down to two things: performance and value," said Robert Wheadon, senior worldwide product manager, Crucial. "Most consumers realize that SSDs help their computers start quicker and run faster, and are a more durable alternative to hard drives, but many don't realize that most SSDs outperform the data transfer capabilities of their SATA 2 machines. With the Crucial v4 SSD, we've come up with a product that's designed to bring the most value out of a SATA 2 system without paying for extra performance that can't be used."

Leveraging the industry-leading memory, design, and manufacturing capability of Micron Technology, Inc., the Crucial v4 SSD is backed by a three-year limited warranty, and is compatible with both PC and Mac systems.

I could live with sata 2 ssd speeds over my hdd speeds... that is if the sata 2 ssd was actually cheaper than the sata 3 drives my a significant margin.

Cool product... but feels like they are just buying up old SSD tech and trying to resell it with a new sticker.

I agree with the M4 comment, that drive feels like a much better purchase even at these prices. You get what you pay for.

Buy.com had the 128GB M4 for $90 shipped the other day...pricing doesn't seem that tempting for the value conscious that are looking for deals to begin with.

The cheapest price for one of these in the UK is the same price as the SATAIII OCZ Agility (525MB/s Read 500MB/s Write)! if it were like £45-50 for 128gb then I may be interested for my older laptop otherwise, no sorry.

I'd take a M4 for a few bucks more even on SATAII.

This is an intro price it will drop quickly. Don't be surprised to see the 128GB version @ 0.50c per GB

I want $.50 for the m4, and $.30 for something like this v4. Is that so bad?

I think this series has some potential. Like people have said I think we can expect prices to drop on these, and when they do I can think of a few uses for the small ones. I wouldn't mind a cheap reliable cache drive for my NAS, or a boot drive for an old SATA II machine running OS X or Linux.

Stats for the V4 series according to Crucial:

CT032V4SSD2
32GB
Sustained Sequential Read * up to (128k transfer) 200 MB/s
Sustained Sequential Write * up to (128k transfer) 60 MB/s
Random Read up to ** (4k transfer) 10,000 IOPS
Random Write up to ** (4k transfer) 1,200 IOPS

CT064V4SSD2
64GB
Sustained Sequential Read * up to (128k transfer) 230 MB/s
Sustained Sequential Write * up to (128k transfer) 100 MB/s
Random Read up to ** (4k transfer) 10,000 IOPS
Random Write up to ** (4k transfer) 2,400 IOPS

CT128V4SSD2
128GB
Sustained Sequential Read * up to (128k transfer) 230 MB/s
Sustained Sequential Write * up to (128k transfer) 175 MB/s
Random Read up to ** (4k transfer) 10,000 IOPS
Random Write up to ** (4k transfer) 4,000 IOPS

CT256V4SSD2
256GB
Sustained Sequential Read * up to (128k transfer) 230 MB/s
Sustained Sequential Write * up to (128k transfer) 190 MB/s
Random Read up to ** (4k transfer) 10,000 IOPS
Random Write up to ** (4k transfer) 4,000 IOPS

Hmm, I was hoping for something reliable, small, and cheap to max out SATA II.

The 32GB is available from Crucial directly for $45 free shipping here in the States, take $10-$15 off and I could be mighty tempted despite the benchmarks.
