Me.ga Shutdown Even Before Debut

Following the mega MegaUpload drama, its head Kim Dotcom decided to start its successor, named Mega (with the URL www.me.ga), registered with the internet TLD .ga for the West African nation Gabon. Following Dotcom's announcement and domain name registration, the URL gained large traffic, but ahead of its debut, the URL has been suspended by people behind the TLD, the Gabon Ministry of Telecommunications. Its minister Blaise Louembe said in a statement, that his country "cannot serve as a platform or screen for committing acts aimed at violating copyrights, nor be used by unscrupulous people." Dotcom's attorney told the press that launch of Mega is on-track, but could feature a different URL.

An African nation actually adhering to copyright laws? Right...next you'll be telling me China is the center of innovation. Wonder who dropped a stack of bills in Gabon to shut it down.

Do wonder why persist with the "Mega" name. Do something different. Write it backwards if you have to. Agem! There you go! No government in existence is gonna be smart enough to figure that out :D

It must have just taken a phone call from US consulate in Gabon.

Because US government has control over *.com TLD. Any .com domain can be suspended by the US government.

I think the biggest problem is that there aren't many countries who can't be intimidated by the US but are not just as unscrupulous themselves (Russia and China being the obvious examples here). Maybe that country that SlySoft went to would be okay...

Works both ways... Canada, Japan, Spain (anyone else remember the football debacle?), and everyone else would be free from US control. Besides, any country restricting internet doesn't need to do it by TLD control.

Yeah but its China and Russia and two hard core Muslim nations that are demanding it. The US turned it down once. But its back in the works now. If you think the US is bad at censorship.....you aint seen nothing yet.

Doesn't really mean much. The .COM domain getting numerous masters instead of one doesn't change the fact it stopped being a nice TLD a while ago. Sites have been moving from the horrors of .COM to country specific TLDs to protect themselves.

Sorry I don't see it.... I am not a racist my friend :). And I support the modern Persian Empire.

Back to the topic, I want to know about Rapidshare. They bribed the feds or something? I mean they are involved in the same business as Megaupload, they too host illegal files only less.

Actually, that'd be great! We'd get a lot more publicity, which would be good since we don't have as many tourists as we'd like to. (Come on, you know you wanna chew on that sugar cane and drink coconut water at the same time!)

I once or twice visited a Dutch site with a .us domain, but soon I had enough of it's content. Generally the (NSFW) content was poorly written.
