AMD Introduces the World's Fastest Notebook Graphics Card

AMD today launched the AMD Radeon HD 8970M, the world's fastest notebook graphics card. The AMD Radeon HD 8970M graphics processing unit (GPU) delivers the best mobile gaming experience imaginable to gamers, powered by AMD's award-winning Graphics Core Next (GCN) architecture.

It's nice to see AMD upping laptop performance. It's all good. With hUMA and GCN things are going to get even better with Kaveri.

This generation has to be the stupidest rebrand ever, Bonaire is one of the most efficient and its not being used on laptop, it should've been the 8800m with cape Verde being 8700m

Imo...laptop GPUs get less impressive and more rehashed every revision. Maybe one of these days Intel will finally catch up to the high end and force the top two to actually release new chips for once.

So 100watt TDP? So it is the fastest thing I could stick in a laptop, play Crysis 3 for an hour and a half and have my 9 cell notebook scream in pain and sweat as it dies from exhaustion. No that's no longer a laptop that's a "desktop replacement" :slap:
If the chip exceeds 50watt (60 max) TDP it uses to much power for the notebook to be really "portable" just my opinion.

There's a slight increase on the GFLOPS but that could just be marketing/driver optimizations. Otherwise it matches the slides across the board.

Yeah, I think the whopping 9 Gflops is likely just driver optimizations.....But in all honesty this mobile gpu matches my 6950 at stock....That's really not bad at all....it's just that it matched it last year when it was called 7970m LOL....

Don't get too excited, they are only separated by the boost clock
HD 7970M: 850 base freq. * 2 op's per clock * 1280 shaders = 2176 GFlop/s SP * 1/16 DP rate = 136 GFlop/s DP
HD 8970M: 900 boost freq. * 2 op's per clock * 1280 shaders = 2304 GFlop/s SP * 1/16 DP rate = 144 GFlop/s DP

Note that the 8970M's base clock is exactly the same as the 7970M at 850Mhz, so the difference is entirely due to the added 50MHz boost.

AMD said they rebrand because OEMs (like Acer, HP, and Dell) demand it. My guess is that it makes it easier for them to explain to consumers which graphics device is best.

blibbaI can't imagine this being faster than a 680MX.
For starters... GTX 680MX isn't a notebook GPU... from what I've seen, you can only "get" it in top-end iMacs and such. Not a single laptop with it in sight, even tho it was "released" a while back. Now GTX 780M which is more or less the same thing, is another thing.
