NVIDIA Announces the GeForce GTX 780 Graphics Card

NVIDIA announced the GeForce GTX 780, the first addition to its desktop GeForce GTX 700 series. Pictured below, the card is as close as it gets to owning a GeForce GTX TITAN, at two-thirds the price. It's based on the same 28 nm GK110 chip, but configured with 2,304 CUDA cores and 192 TMUs, compared to the 2,688 cores and 224 TMUs of the GTX TITAN. The card retains the 384-bit wide GDDR5 memory interface, but holds 3 GB of memory. In that sense, all its key faculties are an exact 50 percent increase over is predecessor, the GeForce GTX 680.

NVIDIA completely recycled the design of GeForce GTX TITAN, down to the PCB and cooler. The only way you can make the two cards out is the lack of memory chips on the GTX 780's back. The card features GPU Boost 2.0, a technology that debuted with the GTX TITAN, boosts clocks and voltage, taking temperatures into account. The GPU core is clocked at 863 MHz, GPU Boost at 900 MHz, and memory at 6.00 GHz (GDDR5-effective). NVIDIA is allowing its partners to launch products with custom design air cooling solutions. Prices should start at $649.99.

Selling a $300 card that's recycled (crippled) from a $350 card sold at $1000, for $650.

Yeah, no.

Yeah, no.
Then this card is simply not designed for you. Same with the Titan, it's not really made around price/performance. It's entirely for performance, and creates a footgap between the Titan and the 680/770 for those that want the power but dont quite have $1k for it.

Yeah, no.
Quite incorrect.

The GTX 680 was the "$300" card you must be thinking of. This is the standard model cut down version of the $650 Titan (sold at $1000).

Would it be a bad decision to just get the vanilla model?

yes, because they will run better with custom cooler and overlocked out of the box design... Im pretty sure custom PCB/cooler 780 cards will match Titan perforamance, my advice is to wait for asus and MSI because they push all cards to the limits with O.C...

As much as I have liked the TwinFrozr (and hated the DCII), I think I want a blower style cooler this time and it doesnt hurt that it looks good.

I've put my order in and Ill just make up the difference in OC myself.

Good for you and congrats for your purchase, you will get the same high 81 degrees temps... But at the same time you have more chances to get a waterblock cuz the stock design...

heh I said it will be crippled compared to Tesla variant, but no nv fans were bla bla
Nvidia's recipe for creating a winning enthusiast card is disarmingly simple: take the best GPU, artificially hobble it in a few meaningful ways, and release at £550. But before the workstation mob become all excited and think of GTX 780 as a small-framebuffer Tesla on the super, super cheap, Nvidia has seen fit to remove/disable the GPU's double-precision ability.

and yet still such a high price, pass. :p

Last Light is an EVGA promotion, I believe. If its like how their previous ones have worked, we will get the code for the game after registering the card on our account @ EVGA. I'm sure either way, we will get squared away with the codes at some point.
