ASUS Readies Silent and Stealthy GTX 970 Strix

ASUS is giving the GeForce GTX 970 its ROG Strix treatment. The cooler features a unique fan-speed curve that keeps the fans dead until a temperature threshold is approached, and only gradually spins it up from there on. So, in most non-gaming and light-gaming applications, the card should be completely quiet. The underlying heatsink is a meaty dual-slot variant of DirectCU II. The card ships with a factory-overclock, although the exact clocks are not known. ASUS plans to launch the card on the 19th.

I agree that it's probably the way the fan curve works. However, I can't help but notice on the box it says in big letters "0dB fan - silent gaming," which is misleading at best.

^^^^^ Saw that over at WCCF. Dude seems convinced the prices are legit ( ref GTX 970 @ $299 and GTX 980 @ $549 )....if they are legit, I guess it instantly makes the GTX 770 the red-headed stepchild of the product line, and AMD will be price-cutting a second time in a week.

You forgot the most important games of our generation, Candy Crush and Bejewelled. I eagerly await their sponsorship of the silent $300 GPU.

I hate when fans don't spin, like in these Strix cards or some "silent" PSUs. It looks as if something is not working, a fan is supposed to spin.
Even the silence argument is false, a slow spinning fan inside a case is inaudible.
Just give users the option, a button like in Seasonic X- series, hybrid fan on/off.

And leave the owls alone.

I like the idea of these STRIX cards but in all honesty from what ive seen and read that any little stress and those fans kick on immediately. Seems like it would be better just to keep them at a low RPM vs just being completely off because when speeds are low enough no one would really notice or can unless they slam their head against the computer.

Still a cool looking card.

RecusNewest prices rumor.

NVidia would never pass on making more money. They always overprice at launch and then let the market demand dictate any price changes.

gtx670 was $399 at launch.
gtx770 was $399 at launch.
gtx970 possibly will be $399-499 at launch.
