NVIDIA Announces the GeForce GTX 980 Ti Graphics Card

NVIDIA announced the GeForce GTX 980 Ti, its latest high-end graphics processor. Positioned a notch below the GTX Titan X, and above the GTX 980, it is designed to offer playable frame-rates at 4K Ultra HD resolution, with high-levels of visual details. Based on the same 28 nm GM200 silicon as the GTX Titan X, the chip features 2,816 CUDA cores, carved out by disabling 2 of the 24 streaming multiprocessor units on the silicon; 176 TMUs, 96 ROPs, and a 384-bit wide GDDR5 memory interface, holding 6 GB of memory.

The GeForce GTX 980 Ti features nearly identical clock speeds to the GTX Titan X, with 1000 MHz core, 1076 MHz GPU Boost, and 7012 MHz (GDDR5-effective) memory. The TDP is rated at 250W. The reference design card draws power from a combination of 6-pin and 8-pin PCIe power connectors. Display outputs include three DisplayPort 1.2, and one each of HDMI 2.0 and DVI connectors. The card is capable of 4-way SLI. NVIDIA board partners will launch custom-design variants of this card, with factory-overclocked speeds, and custom air- and liquid-cooled designs. It starts at US $649.99. With this launch, NVIDIA cut prices of the GeForce GTX 980 to $499.99.

So it's another 780 to the original Titan malarkey then......

Dear oh dear Nvidia. Still, stupendously fast and far cheaper than Titan X. By the time Fiji XT is out, there'll be water blocks available for this so i'll have two choices for water cooling.

Yea AMD just got a shot cross their bow if their card doesn't beat this by a good 15-20% at least yea 200$ will be a bit hard to swallow if that is their price.

Since they are disabling Maxwell shaders again, someone needs to test this to see if it misbehaves as the GTX 970 did.

Nvidia I doubt would make same mistake twice. I bet AMD would be given a free pass on doing it if they did. As for trying to bring up whole 290x cooler thing, they didn't on that cause it was 20%+ performance hit.

Indeed. That's what I've been thinking from the beginning and I don't think people are gonna hesitate.

EDIT: There's no such problem. Just started reading TPU's review, where W1zz states:
The chip is wired to 6 GB of GDDR5 memory across its 384-bit interface and can address all of it at a consistent bandwidth.

I've read the whole review now and he's said that twice in there.

While it's a great card, it really irks me how one can't get the full GPU without spending a grand on it, though. On top of that, it's not possible to get the full GPU and quiet custom cooling out of the box such as Asis Strix or MSI Gaming. It's a ridiculous situation and one that could have been avoided by NVIDIA. I'm definitely sitting this one out and waiting for Pascal.

We need AMD to make a strong comeback with their new card. Well, here's hoping, anyway.

With modern cards they physically fuse off the sections, so no software changes can re-enable them.

I feel so happy that I didn't buy a 980. A few more weeks and AMD will show its Fury. Either way we will be seeing awesome price cuts everywhere!

I fully expect by July the 980 will be floating around $399, maybe less.

Probably just a driver bug like that on-going overclocking issue. So it will depend on driver <--Sarcasm

At the lower price the card is a much better gaming value then the Titan X for sure. For those that don't buy into the higher end cards a few 980 TI reviews mentioned that the 960 TI is coming next week

It's going to hurt AMD bad at that price point. If the 390X isn't noticably more powerful than the 980 Ti, I can't imagine them being able to sell it at a price point that doesn't screw them. If the 390X fails to surpass the 980 Ti, and they have to sell it for $500 to make money, Nvidia could drop the 980 to $350, with the 980 Ti at $599 and just ruin AMD's chances.

Indeed, and whilst I enjoy people breaking down their power bills saying they don't care about it, a card that apparently needs water cooling right out of the gate also means extra costs to the manufacturer, which in turn means less profit.

But of course efficiency be damned! :P

But even nVidia's best is only T2 capable for DX12 whereas AMD is all T3. So it isn't like AMD doesn't have any options when it comes to marketing. Just depends if AMD uses it.

Um how many people even know what difference between t2 and t3? And what diff would it even mean to most people? As for AMD marketing yea i wouldn't trust them to do anything cept put their foot in their mouth like they have been last few years.

There will always be retailers who'll inflate the price. Most expected the card to come in at $800. At $650 its almost reasonable....... This puts alot of pressure on Amd.......

Right now there is probably is a lot of Rage and Fury at the Amd camp
