Amped Wireless Intros ATHENA-EX 15,000 sq.ft AC2600 Wi-Fi Range Extender

Amped Wireless, the leading manufacturer of high power, long range wireless solutions for the home and office, is breaking new barriers with the industry's first High Power AC2600 Wi-Fi Range Extender with MU-MIMO, the ATHENA-EX. This one of a kind Extender is capable of enhancing the performance of any router by delivering up to 15,000 sq ft of blazing fast, additional coverage. Multiple users will now be able to stream, download and surf from the furthest reaches of a home or office without their devices battling for bandwidth.

The ATHENA-EX is the most powerful range extender available today and is designed for multi-device environments. Built with a powerful Dual-Core Processor, 16 high power amplifiers, and 4 high gain antennas, the ATHENA-EX expands the range of any standard Wi-Fi router by repeating the signal and pushing that extended signal out to cover a new, larger area with reliable Wi-Fi. Incredibly fast AC2600 Wi-Fi provides up to 2.53 Gbps, making lag and buffering nightmares of the past. With the power, coverage and bandwidth of this Extender, everyone can stream, download and play at once - on all of their devices.
The ATHENA-EX is also one of the first Wi-Fi extenders built with Multi-User MIMO technology. Traditional extenders stream data to just one device at a time, leaving the rest of the devices to wait their turn which results in slower downloads and video buffering. With MU-MIMO, the ATHENA-EX is able to stream HD content at faster speeds to multiple devices at once, delivering increased speeds for homes with multiple devices. Pair that with Amped Wireless' award winning High Power Technology, the ATHENA-EX delivers unparalleled connection reliability, coverage and performance. Every smartphone, tablet, computer and TV can connect from virtually anywhere in the home or office. It is the solution for whole-home, reliable Wi-Fi.

The Extender also houses four gigabit wired ports to bridge in any wired network devices like printers, PCs and gaming consoles. And two USB storage ports allow for fast file sharing within the network. Setting up the ATHENA-EX is a simple process and can be done with just a tablet or smartphone. The extender also features a Signal Strength LED to help determine the perfect location in the home or office for optimal signal boosting.

The ATHENA-EX is available for pre-order now on this page for $219.99. It will begin shipping to customers on April 12th and will be available at major online and brick and mortar retailers in the next few weeks.

so question, do those massive antennas actually add something these days?
I ask because In my own experience where high gain antennas failed to catch a signal, a simple usb dongle succeded

It's not just about the antennas, but yes, in general, larger external antennas can help boost the range. Do remember that Wi-Fi antennas (unless they're directional) have a doughnut like shape, hence why the router manufacturers often suggest that you put two at 45 degree angle to get good coverage.

Too many things influence Wi-Fi signals though, but sadly Amped rarely live up to their claims and their extra amplifiers also don't seem to do much when their routers are being tested. I suggest having a look at SmallNetBuilder and you'll see that many other manufacturers are producing far superior routers.

Bigger antennas definitely help. I did the mistake of buying my last router with internal one's..... it's still a good router, but I would like to have the options to buy some extended antennas from Ebay and slap them on it.

15000 sq ft sounds big, but transfromed to m^2 its less than 1400, and a circle with that area is Root(1400/pi) = 21 meters, so the signal only travels a bit over 20 meters from the AP?

Yeah...69 feet.
sqrt(15000/pi) = 69.0988 feet radius

That is pretty far for 802.11ac assuming that number means full bandwidth. Most wireless radios will fall off quite a bit that far away.
