PS3 to Launch in Europe and Australasia on 23rd March 2007

London, 25 January 2007 - Sony Computer Entertainment Europe today announced that PLAYSTATION 3 will be launched in the PAL territories of Europe, Africa, the Middle East and Australasia on 23rd March 2007 at a price of EURO 599 (GBP 425, AUD 999.95, NZ 1199.95).

Responding to retail and consumer demand, SCEE confirmed that initially only the 60GB model would be available, with the 20GB model to follow later in the year dependent on demand.

An expected one million PS3 units will be made available during the initial launch period.

SCEE also announced a stellar launch line-up of over 30 game titles for PS3, including eagerly awaited titles published by SCEE such as Resistance: Fall of Man , MotorStorm , Genji : Days of the Blade, FORMULA ONE CHAMPIONSHIP EDITION and Ridge Racer 7. An exceptional range of titles in every genre will also be available at launch from the world's leading third party publishers, including Electronic Arts, Activision, Namco Bandai, Sega, Take 2, Ubisoft, Vivendi Universal, and Sony Online Entertainment.

In addition to games on disc, an exciting range of fully-featured downloadable games will debut on the PLAYSTATION Network. These will include gaming icons such as Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection and Gran Turismo HD Concept; the fully-featured PS3 debut of the best-selling franchise Gran Turismo, realised with full HD (1080p) visual quality. Created by Polyphony Digital Inc and published by Sony Computer Entertainment, Gran Turismo HD Concept has been downloaded by more than 350,000 users since it was released in December 2006 in North America and Japan.

Also available on the PLAYSTATION Network will be brainteasers such as Go! Sudoku and Go! Puzzle, and innovative games such as Blast Factor and flOw , designed exclusively for PLAYSTATION 3 and delivering on the promise to provide original content created by non-traditional developers and publishers.

Concurrent with the European launch, a new System Update to further enhance the entertainment potential of PS3 will be issued.

Announcing the launch details, David Reeves, President of SCEE said, "Following the hugely successful launches of PS3 in Japan and North America, we are absolutely delighted to be able to bring significant numbers of PS3 to the SCEE territories. To be able to launch with over 30 titles across every genre shows that this is our strongest launch line-up in the history of PlayStation, and is what PlayStation fans in Europe have been crying out for."

Wait, they are charging them the same that they are charging us here. That means, its more expensive over there for them. REally not fair. Im not sure, but 599.99 Euros is like 700 bucks or so here right?? Australia has to pay like 1000 dollars and that other country has to pay 1200?????

regardless of how good the ps3 is £425/€599 (approx usd$850) is an insult to the European gamers, to me this looks like an attempt by sony to try and recoup some of its losses by overcharging in Europe as per usual. Such a diffrence in price from the US launch certainly cannot be put down to taxes but on the brightside the import restrictions should be removed when the console is launched here so smarter people could be a cheaper import if the must have one of these right away, one thing is for certain though with prices like that sony are not doing themselves any PR favours and it may drive those people who waited so long out of loyalty to sony into opting for a cheaper xbox360 with games package and still have £100+ left over. With all the troubles sony has had with this console i still cannot see why sony is still trying to work the prestige angle with the ps3.

With the adoption rate of the Wii and the continued release of killer games for the 360. I can't see Europe doing much with this PS3 release, especially at THOSE prices.

I've asked quite a few Europeans (over xbox live) what they think about the PS3 and how well it will do compared to the 360, and the response is always this ":wtf: :ohwell: '

as always we are overcharged compared to others, its an insult to all europeans...

all the big companies always bring stuff out late for us and charge much more than others even when you take off our taxes we still end up paying more...

Someone need to beat them with a nice pointy stick :D

Well I don't know about the other european counties but here in the UK min wage is £5.35 ($10.51) for people aged 22 and over, £4.45($8.74) for people aged 18-21, and £3.30($6.48) for people aged 16-17....

Most people I know get more that tjhat though even in bottom rung jobs, i'm 19 and operate a checkout at tesco, so my min wage is £4.45($8.74) but I make £6.00($11.78) an hour so not too bad just to get me through university lol

nope, fact is they just like to rip Europeans off, the last consoles were a few pounds higher due to a higher rate of tax but this new pricing scheme by sony for the PS3 is a slap in the face of the young kids that may have saved up all their pocket money for months for a ps3, their is no justification for such a price hike for Europeans and elsewhere.
