Samsung Electronics Ltd., has introduced the world’s first 1.8-inch hard drive with a 60GB per disk capacity and a super-slim form factor that is just 5-millimeters tall. Samsung’s sleek new 1.8-inch N-series features 20GB, 30GB, 40GB and 60GB per disk capacities – the largest one-disk storage capacity offered by any drive on the market today. The new slim hard drive spins at 4200 rpm and according to Samsung is "among the quietest on the market today". The power consumption of the drive is rated at 0.3 watts in idle mode. It's 60GB per disk, so they can keep the physical size of the drive very small. Other HDDs have more than one disk to make up the platter, hence the larger size.

I just read in my maximum pc magazine (yesterday) that Samsung has already gotten to work and near completion on 100GB 1.8" drives. Which, they say, will trump the 60GB maximum currently available. So, just think, 100GB Ipod for like 300 bucks. Thats like a million songs or more :)

laptops use 2.5" drives (with the exception of a few smaller ones)
