AMD Donates $16,000 to Dell's Plant a Tree for Me fund

The Dell Plant a Tree for Me fund has just gotten a large benefactor: AMD. AMD is donating $1 for every employee they have, which just so happens to be 16,000 people. This means that Dell will have $16,000 worth of trees to plant. The Plant a Tree for Me fund is a fund-raiser that tries to negate the environmental impact of their computers. By donating two to six dollars with your desktop or laptop purchase, Dell will plant a tree that will properly negate the environmental impact of your new computer.

While it is a great idea, the whole "carbon neutral" thing is a bit of a gimmick in my opinion. By providing the option to "neutralize the carbon released" by buying the product, it would help to relieve some of the worries that the environmentally concerned would have, which would merely give the notion to that individual that he can do anything that he wants as long as he can pay money to neutralize the carbon output. Either way though, good for AMD! Hopefully Intel will do something similar to this :D

If they want to rub in the whole "we made more money than you did", then I'd be posting a press release about Intel donating 16 million dollars....tomorrow :p.

yeah too bad that's ALL it is, a marketing scheme, even if global warming were true(which it isn't, and there's plenty of facts now to prove it) they'd still be fighting a losing battle, lol as scary as it is lumbering is making more of an impact than can be counteracted

Oh, and what are these facts? Or are you merely implying that global warming is not due to just human activity (which is obvious)?

It is impossible to "prove" something. In scientific methodology, you either support it (the alternative hypothesis) or not support it, in which case we default with the null hypothesis. In this case of course, global warming is the alternative hypothesis. IANAG (I am not a geologist) but from what I've read, there is plenty of evidence for global warming. A totally different hypothesis (that humans are a contributing factor) also has overwhelming evidence, but only correlational, and of course correlation does not imply causation.

Pastafarians give a good example - it may seem that the decline in pirates caused global warming - i.e. causational implication.

I think we will all agree when I say that this isnt the thread for a debate on global warming :)

LOL!
the decline in pirates caused global warming

A quick note on Global warming, one of the biggest hoaxes in the world today. Hate me if you will, I Simply dont care. However, if you read facts, based on geological data, the earth has "heated up" roughly 5C in thousands to millions of years. Its actually cooled down some, so, shall we call that global cooling? In fact, its cooled down alot from supposed Prehistoric times. This global warming thing is simply Al Gore clinging to an ideal to further his need for the public spotlight. While I Dont doubt these greenhouse gases arent good for the environment, man has minimal impact on the whole earths temperature. Id be more pressed to worry about the ozone layer and our ever growing expansion and pollution than global warming. Just my two cents worth, take it or leave it.

Now, on to the subject, good for AMD and Dell. However, if AMD did find $1 trees, I want the same deal. However, I think its just $!6,000 worth of trees meaning the trees could cost like $30 a piece

That just shows that global warming/global cooling is cyclic. This "knowledge" is nothing new.

oh yes. big hoax. al gore.

Of course, i challenge you to explain one thing. IF every TPU users PC were placed together, the output heatwise would be like a furnace, so to speak. SO uhh, where is our heat going? I dunno, i dont have a magic fairy cool my house, and my air con just pushes the heat outside.

The REASONS given for global warming may be shite, but that doesnt mean it isnt happening. Explain where the heat from all our hardware goes, and i'll beleive you.

Oh and : go AMD/dell.

I really hope you aren't attributing wasted heat to the rise in global temperatures. Because that simply is not how things work on a planetary scale. The amount re-radiated into space is many many magnitudes higher than anything we possibly have to "heat" the earth.
