I must be missing something. These specs are unimpressive.

Maybe they are more affordable since most of NEC's LCD lineup is overpriced.

Not always true.
Take for example this,
You have the Dell Ultrasharp 20.1" and the NEC 20".
The Dell uses (or used to have a) SIPS Panel (most expensive panel out there).
The NEC did not.

The Dell had sharper and brighter picture.
The NEC had a better response time.

The NEC was $100-150 more.

The Dell was a better panel and cheaper.
NEC panels are way overpriced (esp. now since prices have dropped).

The same thing happens with HDTVs.
Sony and Sharp are the most expensive.
However, Samsung and Toshiba offers equivalent if not better TVs for a cheaper price.

maybe the monitor is glass fronted and extremely low powered if not i really cannot see why it would have a $660 price tag (from source)

Samsung stuff is also expensive as well. Though not in the price range of Sony and Sharp. I have to admit, Sony and Sharp and Samsung and Toshiba, hell LG and Panasonic all of them offer a damn good picture. to me, my Vizio, the Sharp, Sony and Samung seems to have the best whenit comes to LCDS
