Vista Successor in H2 2009?

According to TG Daily, the next version of Windows (codenamed Blackcomb Vienna) could be scheduled for release as early as the second half of next year. The operating system was originally slated to be launched in 2010, but the latest roadmap from Microsoft gives Windows 7 a release-to-manufacturer (RTM) date of H2 2009. The site is also reporting that an early version of the software, being dubbed "Milestone 1" (M1), has already been shipped to key Microsoft partners. If true, this would mean that Windows Vista will only last as the company's flagship operating system for about three years - compared to the five years of Windows XP.

this confirms to me that Vista is the new Windows Millennium and hopefully with this new OS m$ realises that making the end user need to upgrade their systems in order to use an OS will hamper sales greatly.

So much for going to Vista.

I'll just stick with XP x64 and go to Vienna. By that time DX10 still won't have become standard...

No...I'm comparing it to XP 64-bit edition. Which is built on Server 2k3 and is SO much better than XP in every single way.

I say add 2 to 3 years to MS target date for the next OS. I am not ready for a new OS. I bought Vista in its 2nd week out but went back to XP Pro. I hope SP1 for Vista will entice me back to using it. Polish up Vista for us MS and then work on it's successor.

Eh, MS planned Vista to be used for about three years on their long-term roadmap before Vista was even released. I really hate that methodology, because it almost seems like they're wanting to go to a subscription based OS. What are supposed to be the main differences with Vienna or whatever it's gonna be called?

Its kernal will be stripped back from Vista and be less resource hungry according to reports will be alot friendlier with older software and the ui will be different. I assume weel also have the latest dx for it and the rest who knows.

Knowing Microsoft, there will be lots of delays.

So perhaps by the time they get it done, Vista would be standard anyway.

I still don't understand why people call Vista the 2nd millenium.
As I remember Millenium was released just before windows 2000. Also it didn't offer anything more than 98 at that time. Vista on the other hand is a flagship product, which as it may look like XP, does not have almost anything in common with it's predecessor.

3 years are enough time for an OS. XP ruled too much time, and this resulted in the mass stiffnes of users. If we go back a couple of years ago, you'll remember that XP had tremendous requirement for it's time too.

Soon there will be a end to DX as most API's today are independant of alot of the DX features, and implement the same idea of "CTM or Close to metal" interface through the driver. Implementing a standard of hardware, and alloing a driver to have full controll over more of the process involved, thus improving performance on hardware.

But the release of another "lean" OS by our standards has been under the table since most of the valuable features of Vista were thrown by the side of the road to make it's release date. Vista was too complex, too soon, but did serve as a learing tool for this next release. Alot of the original functionality and ability to make it truly more secure, and a robust OS is supposeed to be in place. But I believe more "security" items will be implemented by MS. And more demands placed on hardware makers for the drivers they provide.

Are you a noob, seriously?

It doesn't really have to do as much with just features as it has to do with reliability, performance, and just everything in general. ME locked up all the time (literally every 5 mins if you were doing something and randomly if it was idle) and was just plain jacked. Obviously, Vista isn't as bad in that respect, but overall, it's horrible. M$ and everyone would like to pretend that ME never existed. The same is happening with Vista. Perhaps it's ME's sibling. Either way, it stands up to ME's legacy of atrociousness, therefore, it's referred to as ME2.

Edit: I was also just thinking that the same thing has happened with both OSes. For ME, they took 98 and piled 2000 type crap on it and screwed it up. For Vista, they took XP and changed some WDMs, added that worthless aero shit and that ruined it. I wonder if they'll learn on the new one. I doubt it.

Got it.... Thing is I don't remeber sending this to anyone anyways, only posting it on TPU as soon as I found out. My point is that I posted this news like last year and it never got posted in the news section. I don't want to sound like a baby here, sooo anyways about that Vienna...

What new features will it have that vista did not have, anyone know, is it too soon to say...
