Comcast Plans 100Mbit Internet Speed for Customers

Comcast Corporation says it is currently on track to offer speeds of over 100Mbps to 20 percent of its customers by the end of 2008. By the end of 2010, they hope to expand the product to most markets in the United States. Comcast Senior Vice President of Investor Relations, Marla Dooner, calls the speed 'very competitive' with Verizon FiOS.

Comast is the United State's second largest ISP and the largest cable television provider. Among cable operators, Comcast has been the most aggressive in deploying a wideband technology known as Docsis 3.0 in response to user demand for high definition video.

panchomanuseless.

the people that are actually going to use the speed wouldn't be able to and most people living in an urban area will most likely be capped off at everything to speeds of uploading at 30 kbps..
im sure i could find a few uses for it.
but if they want to compete with verizon then they wouldnt do that.
its not the fact that you would use it, but rather that you have it.

but wait i guess if i did have this service i would need to upgrade to some new routers.

everybody will have to upgrade the modem. They shouldn't have to upgrade the routers.

BigBruser13100mbs aint so good when you can only download so many bites in a certain period of time. I read a week or so ago that Comcast decided to put a cap on download amounts because people were downloading more than Comcast thought they should be so now there is new policy.
Do not believe they cap.. Last i heard was what they do now is charge you extra when you use xxx amount. Think it was around 200GB.

Currently Comcast has no such limits in their contracts.

Verizon like Comcast is a corportation. Corporations only care about consumers because without consumers they make no money.

However, Verizon is no better than Comcast in terms of customer service. They both have good and bad employees and it really comes down to who comes to your house. For example, since FIOS can be installed in up to 7 rooms, I had the whole local team (3 vans and 8 employees) doing the job for $350.

Comcast is the same. They usually have good quality service.

It all comes down to competition folks. If anything, 100mbit Comcast will help push up FIOS speeds as well.

Corporations do not care about their consumers, just their bottom line. It is the LAW, corporations must MUST ensure the growth of their shareholders portfolios. Ever heard of a corporation purposely reducing profits, and survived in the long run? That is why you have corporations like Monsanto and Pfizer who put out many products that do harm to their consumers.

And it is true that other nations like Japan, have 30mb+ broadband for their people for as little as we pay for 768K DSL... it is because it is not profitable.

I still wished that I would get better download speeds when downloading private composed music in raw music files... I hate caps; but it sure is profitable for Comcast though.

I work for Comcast myself, currently the Baltimore area is at 16/1, I wonder what 100Mbps holds for us.... and btw I don't work in the internet side, don't flame me. I don't agree with everything we do either. But it's a nice place to work IMHO. It pays for my food, modding, and my wedding. As a matter of fact, I met my wife-to be at Comcast, lol.

P.S.

Bittorrent is not illegal, and bandwith caps suck ass.

There are actually a bunch of large cable companies like Cox, Comcast, and Time Warner.

@ bryan

Corporations should be allowed to make profits. It's only when a corporation becomes malicious and sabotages its competitors that such a corporation should be punished. If you don't like Comcast, just go with Verizon or another company. Before long, Comcast will start to lose business if they are not competitive.

Without customers there would be no share holders because there would be no demand.

Btw, Japan has such quick speeds because Japan is an island. You can't expect to get 30+ mbps speeds in the USA for the prices in Japan because the usa is 26 times larger than Japan. It costs that much more to maintain and develop the infrastructure.

Flashstar,

I totally agree, that the corporations that cause harm to the public should be punished; the jailhouse and repo should do good. :) And my dad owns his own business, so I am not anti-profit.

With the way the market is working nowadays, I think you can agree that "demand" is easy to tickle awake. Just look at the useless junk advertised on TV and how well that sparks "demand."

And I do not fully agree with the island theory, when it is fact that Terayon in the past was barred from using its network technologies that could have brought broadband to most homes easily... mind you this was near the early 90's or earlier. Nortel in Canada layed km's of fibre-optic lines throughout Calgary, but were they ever used? Nope. The tech is here, but if I were running these ISP providers, I would charge 40+ for mediocre internet too, if I could get away with it... and they are getting away with it just fine. :)

I know were all hoping for better service,

Comcast are friggin idiots. Over here they don't even know who is using their lines. I've been using 4 modems in my house for the last 5 yrs. I have 2 dedicated to myself :D They all have separate IPs & they all do that 30mb dl burst crap with the 1mb ul.

Heh, I even got cocky and had 2 of the modems sitting right on the cable box when they had to come to upgrade the thing. The guy didn't say a damn thing. I even asked him about having multiple modems & he said that Comcast don't pay him enough to say anything about it but he did say he saw that kind of stuff all the time :p In my part of town CC doesn't care what you do as long as they get their money once a month - & it only $45 :shadedshu

If they want to start selling some bent, overpriced 100mb BS, go right ahead. I'll keep what I got. The upload will still be as watered down as ever

But I do love their BOEPC commercials

9 out of 10 modems only support up to 30mb dl anyway. Why 4 modems anyway?

I have 13 pc users fumbling around on the internets  I also can DL upto 500 GB a week - I have a pc completely dedicated for that. Given that, it sucks up one connection alone so I have another I use for myself. The kids have one for their activities. The adults did share theirs at one point but when the kids gamed too much the connection was slow as hell so I had to set them up a separate modem too...not that CC cares or anything

Please don't blame me for taking avantage of a huge company :p

Comcast doesn't cap speeds yet they just throttle speeds and watch what is downloaded onto your network. They sent me two emails saying I have download illegal software.
