Passive PowerColor HD 4850 Pictured

The guys over at Hexus.net have got hold of a photo showing a passively cooled PowerColor Radeon HD 4850.

The card...utilizes 54 aluminium fins, an all-copper base and four heatpipes to help keep it cool. The high-rise design, however, rules out users with low-profile HTPC chassis.

Considering the temperatures the actively cooled HD 4850 reaches, I cannot imagine a passive cooler is wise. However, this cooler is considerably larger than the reference cooler and it will be interesting to see how it performs, if and when it is released.

Like how more heatpipe coolers are coming out with horizontal pipe configuration, so that they don't block the mem and you can use same ramsinks for all. (that just screams for a low noise 120mm)

That would be one seriously borderline cooling system.
Mind you, a 120mm fan would probably yield some interesting results.

Seems a bit silly that the 2 heatpipes that are in the middle of the core go to the end of the cooler and are very close together. I bet this would perofrm on par with the accelero S1 with a 120mm fan attached though.

auras fridge... add a fan and you have a thermalright-bane. This cooler is WAY better than the S1... the quality, etc is up there with thermalright. Auras, you have to remember is the OEM that makes coolers for mfgrs such as Dell etc.

It needs a fan (atleast one :D), no matter how you look at it. w/o it you'll just have 100C of piping heat flowing around the card :wtf:

i have a similar passive cooling system made of 2 HR-03 GT, i brought it to my 4870s crossfired and it's working fairly well even under stress. The case require an accordingly good airflow to maintain the pipes under 75-80°c.

hook it up to a BTX case and you can :toast: I seriously think you could. Mine gets so hot its ridiculous.

There no way I'm putting something that gets that hot in my case w/o a fan :nutkick:

GT's are notorious for being like kilns, and a accelero cooled mine to 30 degrees ish on idle, 40 odd load. If that passive systems as good as TK says it is, itll be one hell of a card+cooler combo.

should work just fine in a case with ok air flow
