Dell Expands XPS One with 24 inch Screen

Dell XPS One is the company's monolithic space-saving desktop PC model. The company introduced a new model of the PC with a 24-inch model, with updated hardware. The 24-inch XPS One packs a 1920 x 1080 pixel high-definition display, along with under-the-hood enhancements that include an Intel Core 2 Quad Q8200 processor, 4 GB of memory, 320 GB of storage, and integrated Intel GMA X4500HD graphics. Optionally, you could choose the same model with NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT 512MB graphics or a Blu-ray drive. The system incudes sleek speaker units with a bundled sub-woofer, made by JBL. The system is available in three colours: Midnight Grey, Pure White and (PRODUCT) RED. Prices start at US $1,699.

That's a sexy system for anyone that doesnt plan to upgrade anytime soon. I'd buy my gf that to keep her off my gaming rig.

That is a 9600M GT, not a 9600 GT.

Meh -- nice design, but with the 24-inch iMac starting at $1799 with comparable specs, it'll be tough to pick the Dell if I was buying a present for someone, especially if you're wanting to impress. :D

I don't see how someone could not be impressed with that system, it actually looks way better than imac, the stand is 10 times more stylish than the imac, trust me I got my dad an imac but I have to admit this one kicks the crap out of imac, 6 usb ports, built in hdtv tuner, firewire, memory card reader, quad core, 4 gigs of ram, imac does not even come close, I am a mac junky when it comes to style but dell beat imac with this one.

....It's a desktop. It's not a huge card. Couldn't they fit it?

I don't know, I would have a hard time deciding between the 24" iMac and the 24" XPS One.

Processor wise, either way you go is good enough. The iMac's processor would probably be a little better for the average users being that it is a faster clocked dual-core, and the XPS has a slower clocked Quad

The iMac only has 2GB of RAM though, which is kind of a downer, and upping it to 4GB take the price up to nearly $2,000.

The better speakers, better Blu-Ray software support, and 16:9 resolution of the XPS will make that the HTPC experience will be a little better.

The better stock graphics card of the iMac is a huge benefit though.

In the end, I think it will really come down to what the intended purpose of the computer will be. If it is going to be used as an HTPC, or even to replace someones TV(and I've seen that), then I think I would go with the XPS. If it was going to be in more of a traditional computer role, I would go with the iMac.

It is an All-in-one, not a true desktop. Essentially, we are talking about an entire computer squeezed into the space only slightly larger than what an LCD monitor takes up. More than likely they could have worked in a full desktop GPU, but they didn't. Probably to save space and keep heat down.

You're right about the HTPC thing -- the XPS would be better for that. Purely as a desktop role, though, go with the iMac -- for a present to impress someone, of course. I wouldn't have a use for either one. :D

And Apple's prices for their RAM upgrades are beyond ridiculous. Since the Intel transition, though, most RAM we can get elsewhere (for a fraction of the price) works fine in them.

Sexy machine, but I like the iMac better. Plus, what average computer user needs a quad core? If you're going quad core at least get a decent gpu or just drop a cheaper dual core in it and save some cash.

The quad core would really come in handy in an HTPC role, especially if you are recording something on the HD tuner while watching an HD movie. For the average user, the Quad core is about as useless as the higher clocked dual core is in the iMac.

Actually, even prior to the Intel transition, most ram worked in Macs without issue. As long as they can do Jedec specs, they were fine.

Which leads to my next point, the ram is user serviceable in the iMac, so just grab the base amount, and buy your ram separate if you plan to grab an iMac.

What's the deal with the price? A buddy built a gaming rig (with parts that I picked :)) and it has SLIed 260s. 24" mon, etc and it was about the same price.

What a rip off, as usual, dull.

And he managed to do it in an All-In-One configuration like these?

No, formfactor is actually a feature. Many people do not want a tower or separate components for a PC. That's the whole reason these exist. If there wasn't a market for the formfactor, it would exist. I myself have a Core 2 iMac (white model) in this house. It takes up very little space, which is exactly what was needed.

I guess people like to start fireplaces with benjamins.

I could cram the stuff in a thin case, but what for? And this thing will run hot, regardless.

There's no way apple would be getting free money for cheap hardware out of my tight bunghole. I could blow that on my car and it would be more productive than giving it to dull or apple.

Ah, but could he use it to impress those cute geeky girls in the Apple ads? I think not. ;)

Just because you are too narrow minded to understand that some people want an All-In-One form factor, that doesn't mean they are the retarded ones.

There are several instances where having an XPS One over a regular computer would be benefitial.

That picture could've been even better had the artist used the wireless keyboards and mice for the iMac. :D

EDIT: There, fixed it.

The monolithic desktops usually have mobile components, such as laptop CPUs, boards, SO-DIMM memory, etc.

yeah haha

its just funny what fanboys do because of whatever reason, personally to me a pc is a pc and a mac is starting to become a pc, hell windows runs good on mac hardware when in actuality its still pc hardware

There are definte down sides to the All-In-One design, but there are down sides to having a seperate computer also. There are definitely situations where I can see the XPS One or iMac All-In-One design being a positive.
