S3 Graphics Launches Next Generation Chrome 500 Series GPU Line

S3 Graphics today announced its next generation Chrome 500 graphics processors, building upon the success of a product family based on the most power-efficient GPU architecture on the market. Today's users will now be able to enjoy the latest Blu-ray playback, streaming HD video, DirectX 10.1, and OpenGL 3.0 applications on Microsoft Windows and Linux platforms.

DX 10.1 or performance aren't really relevant. We already know it'll be crap. Hardware Blu-ray acceleration and the likes could be interesting though. Might be nice for media PC's.

IMO, that depends: this product is intended for the low end market and, as such, i might be a contender.

It has against it the lack of nVidia/ATI/Intel name though and, personally, i consider that a pretty big handicap.

I have yet to see any of S3 cards (i'm referring to these chrome series) on sale, here in Portugal. Why? Lack of recognition?? Dunno about elsewhere in the world, though.

We have yet to see any benches, haven't we? As such, i don't really know!

I expect this card to be competitive against the low end market: be it power wise, price wise or both. If not, it's a failed card even before it's out.

i think S3 can't compete in the midrange market since it moves faster than the low end market, theyve tried in the past and gotten stomped by nvidia and ati. 9800GTX+ and hd 4850 are midrange cards now, and i seriously doubt s3's ability to make a card that can even come close to either of those.

yea, i remember that review. but i think for the price they were selling for theyu couldnt compete with nvidia/ATI lower end. Besides, they are difficult to find even in the US, i dont recall seeing them for sale.

I think that this is a new chip.




530 GT: 625 core - 500 mem - 3DMark06 must be around 2900 since a HD4350 scores around 2850
440 GTX: 725 core - 700 mem - 3DMark06 around 2400-2500

They will probably launch a 540 GTX soon with higher clocks like the 440 GTX.
The 400 series have 32 shaders. Maybe the 500 series have 48 or more ...

S3 doesn't aim at gaming or anything. Their previous product performed horribly. A reasonably fast card for $50? It's clearly low end, hence performance isn't interesting. The hardware acceleration for video is what it offers, this is what will make or break it.

:wtf: a 4850 is not midrange its a high midrange card IMHO. I'm talking about competing with cards like the 4670.
