Samsung Readies 12.1-inch NC20 Netbook for CES Next Year

Samsung was a bit late to the netbook party with its first NC10 netbook, but now the company is going to catch up on others with NC20. Samsung NC20 will supposedly be the NC10 successor, and while the attention this week is on NVIDIA and Intel, the NC20 will be powered by a VIA platform. The reported specifications claim a 12.1-inch display, a 1.3GHz VIA Nano U2250 processor, 1GB of DDR2 RAM and a 160GB hard drive, all packed in a system that weighs 1.5 kilograms and costs US $642 (Euro 450). The netbook will feature built-in Bluetooth 2.0, Wireless 802.11b/g, single Ethernet, a 3-in-1 memory card reader and a 1.3MP camera. Other details remain sketchy for now, it's also unclear what platform this VIA CPU will plug into. Samsung will presumably debut the NC20 at CES next year.

Other sources say the NC20 is NOT the successor to the NC10 netbook (subnotebook), but staked at a different market: "ultra" laptop format not netbook format. We'll have to see. There has been noise of a NC11 to replace the NC10.

Let's hope Samsung has stuck with the excellent readability of the MATTE screen on the NC10 and hasnt ventured into glossy screens like their other larger laptop offerings!

Its a perfect size for me but still to underpowered. Right now I have a Dell Mini 9 but the thing is just to small.

My Perfect Netbook would be:
12.1" Screen
large keyboard
Dual core atom 330
2gb ram
6 cell battery
32gb ssd
card reader
wifi
bluetooth
Vista (vLited ofcourse ;) )

I know this is getting a little close to full blown laptop but its not quite there and would be a lot deal lighter. Don't need an optical drive and I guess the camera could be optional. All this for $500 and it would be a steal.

but then its not a netbook its a laptop. When I think netbook I think lightwieght and lowpower. If you were to add an athlon x2 and a higher end chipset it would require more power use (less battery life), require better cooling, and it would make it a lot heavier.

I love how dell mini is so light and the battery lasts almost 4 hours.

AMD had announced (at some point) an Athlon 2000 and 780G platform that supposedly drew less power than the Atom/945GSE, but was still aimed at the same market.

There's nothing wrong with beefing up the specs on netbooks, just once they get above $500 and 10 inches, I would find it difficult to call them netbooks still.

I'm curious as to what graphics chip this laptop uses, whether it's the awful Unichrome integrated series, or this is one of the first examples of 'trinity' and they use a Chrome gpu.
