With those prices I could afford a quad core for my next CPU upgrade!

Mm I've been eye balling the Q9400 for some time now... Well actually the Xeon version since it's even cheaper.

Or maybe the good ol' Q6600. It's so cheap. And with 9 in multi :)

Me likes, seeing the Q9400 at $220 range makes me think the 940's gonna have to drop! CPU upgrade here I come, ty competition!

So I can either buy a Q9650 and overclock it to the same frequency as my Q6600, or I can buy a whole new i7 platform. The choices are really quite weak.

@ 300 for a 9650 there is no reason to go phenom 2 if u already have a lga775 board

This is the reason why I'm happy to see good and competitive processors from AMD (PhenomII 3Ghz stock clock[massive overclocking headrom]) Becouse intel needs to drop prices allso! "And competition is good for Customers" :toast:

why, nothing really utilizes quad core yet anyway... an E8400 is a perfect budget gamer CPU

Well there are a few things that's why I said "nothing really" instead of "absolutely nothing".

Point being, Dual-cores are still a warrant-able purchase.

The Q9550 with 12MB cache is really tasty.

The Q6600 (closest quad in that price range) is €20 more than the E8400, that's not exactly cheap considering the E8400 is already €160 and I can't just spend an extra €20 if I feel like it because I don't have a job.

And I don't really need quad-core, although dBpoweramp utilizes quad-core to convert 4 songs at once and only 2 for dual-core, though that's converting music which doesn't take long and if it did it's just a matter of leaving the PC on overnight and setting it to turn off when it's finished converting.

Anyway, it was said that it's all about clock speed for BluRay playback, can the Q6600 clock to 4GHz?

Wonderful, this is the price drop I've been wanting. Now I can pick up a Q9650(as soon as I get my tax refund), and that will be my last 775 upgrade, hopefully lasting me through the year when I can afford to go Core i7.

Dual-Cores still have plenty of usefulness. Most people, including gamers, do not need a quad-core processor. They are nice to have, but not a necessity.

You don't need a 4GHz processor for Blu-Ray playback. Even a low-end Core 2 Duo handles Blu-Ray just fine at stock speeds.

You think I'm making excuses? Well, sorry I don't wipe my ass with money or have an extra $25 in my pocket just to go quad-core.

I would wait for another week, and restrain from spending my money for few days, so I can save $25 more buck for a quad-core.
But that is years ago.

Now, I just need wait for my paycheck...

If you listen to me, you'll go the correct way when it comes to PC's. Your quad at 3.6GHz (My Q9550 is at 3.6GHz too) will last a year+ easy and still max games fine with 50 or 60+ FPS. Nahalem isn't worth it in my opinion :)

To back this up, my lil' e1200 chip @2.1Ghz(266fsbx8) in combination with a 2600 Pro handles 1080p mkv playback just fine.
