Pioneer on Tuesday announced the release of its latest Blu-ray, DVD and CD writer, the BDR-2203. Using SATA interface, the BDR-2203 writes dual-layer Blu-Ray media at up to 8x speeds, equal to about 15 minutes of your time for writing a single-layer 25 GB Blu-Ray disc, or just about 30 minutes for completion of a dual-layer 50 GB disc. The burner also writes recordable DVDs at 16x, dual-layer DVDs at 8x, CD-R media at 32x, and CD rewritable discs at 24x. Along with the burner you'll receive CyberLink PowerDirector, PowerDVD, and Power2Go software products. The BDR-2203 should already be in stores, with a suggested retail price of $250.

I cant wait till Blu-Ray burners are like DVD drives now.

I've been keeping my eye on BR and it appears that they know that BR is a niche market. Therefore IMO, attempting to maximize profit on every unit sold. We may never see a BR player as cheap as current dvd players.

Prices have only come down as manufacturing costs have gotten slightly cheaper. Besides, bleed edge hardware is historically more expensive. But I still see them trying to maximize profit on each unit sold none the less.

And rightly so, there wasn't a time prior to that were folk could actually bring home movies and watch them in mass as we do today. And, there wasn't a competing product being sold significantly cheaper either. IMO, 2 different types of markets. One can't relate to another. Both Beta and VHS brought about "Home Theater" to the masses.
by: freaksaviorI have an old (antique) VHS recorder. I'll sell it to you for ~500$. I bought my 6x BD Burner from Newegg for 200$. I honestly don't see why I'd want to burn a disk (no matter what kind) quickly. It takes only a few minutes anyway. If it were in the realm of hours, it would be a different story, but 10 or 20 minutes and 100 or 200 dollars is ridiculous. And even then, you can just leave it on at night. Heck, the only thing I'd burn a BD for now adays is to backup pirated games, err.. I mean store precious memories taken with my HD camcorder.

Three years ago when news of the PS3 came about I had an 80GB HDD and a CD Buner, so I was amazed at the 25-50GB capacity on a single disk. But now? With my 6TB of hard-drive space (and games not taking more than a DVD9)? Not really. It will take years for games to come out at anything close to 15GB, let alone 25GB or 50GB. Heck, it took us 10 years to go from 800MB to 8GB, so maybe Blu-ray will only become mainstream around ~2015.

Oh, and don't worry about games shipping on BluRay disks until BluRay players are the norm in gaming computers. That won't happen until about six months after the drives are under $60 each. Be prepared for 4 DVD DL disk installs! :laugh:
by: FordGT90Conceptwhen hl2 came out, me and my little brother bought it, and i think it was like 6 CD's lol. At the time, DVD drives were still relatively expensive (if I remember correctly) so all we had was a cd drive. What a pain in the butt that was to install.

Rockstar went overboard with the textures for the PC release. On PS3 and XB360 versions, they probably scaled the textures way down to fit on a DVD9 (or equivilent) disk. They do that not only to spare having to change DVDs all the time but also because both consoles only have 256 MiB graphics memory. 256 MiB graphics memory on PC forced low settings on GTA4.
GTA IV for the 360 doesnt have scaled down textures :)
The reason the PC release is so big is because it is multi-lingual, so it has all the audio tracks present, for the 360 (not sure about PS3), you have different language releases, so it all fits on one DVD :D
Whats interesting with the PC release is that it is obviously cheaper to do one version with an extra disc, than more than one version with only one disc.
Lol, I don't get why it can only burn "CD-R media at 32x". Wait, yes I do, it will never fully replace "older" drivers while people are still burning stuff(music) to CD.
