How well is W10 working for you in games? (Thinking of upgrading)

Been checking out W10 lately on my VM and I'm thinking of upgrading from W7. I can stop the auto driver updates which would otherwise be the real dealbreaker, but forced updates for everything else don't bother me hugely.

I know it works pretty well overall without too many glitches now, but I'm really interested in how well it works in games as I have so much invested in them. What's your experience with W10 and games? Please let us know in the poll.

Only problem I noticed so far is Act of War: High Treason gives an Invalid CD Key error. It might be because I'm running it on a limited user...haven't tried admin account yet. I think the gaming experience is quite the same as Windows Vista/7/8.1.

I just loaded GoG Tie Fighter 1998, all I had to do to get it to run was turn off 3D mode and voila. Beyond that every other game I have loaded plays great. My systems are stable, fast and smooth.

So far no issues here with my games ( Currently playing Dead Island, FEAR3, and Metro Last Light)

I am mainly running old games and online stuff. I've had no issues with any games including the NFS series, WoW, World Of Tanks and World Of Warships. I haven't updated any drivers since doing a clean W10 install, it just ticks along ☺

I've been having a fine time gaming on 10 since I switched, no real noticeable or tangible differences to me.

Only rare issue I've had very recently was with FC4 (crashed on load a handful of times) but I chalk thst up to Ubi because I've had issues with their games (on win8) more than any others since FC3.


But recently I've played through a few with positive results: FC4, Soma, Alien Isolation, Sniper Elite v2 and Nazi Zombie Trilogy, Call of Duty World at War, Star Wars Battlefront beta and Unreal Tournament pre-alpha, all ran nicely.

There is no option, "No problems" . I mean it's feels the same as Win 8.1. I didn't really have any issues with games the games I tried. I can't speak for all titles in the world.

use O&O shutup 10 for privacy concerns, and a third party windows update util for concerns over that and its a great OS.

Despite some of my other problems with the PC I have W10 on, playing games isn't one of them. All games have played flawlessly as they did on W8.1.

As to you stopping driver updates, you can breathe easier that your fixes wont be needed. I have yet to have a GPU driver forced on me. I purposely upgraded driver in late September, and with Patch Tuesday and a host of in-between updates later, there has been no effort by MS to force an Nvidia driver on me since the first few weeks of release.

Well it works fine for me, but i ran into to a couple of issues related to Microsoft decided to get rid of SecuROM in Windows 10 so i couldn't run games like Medal of Honor Airborne on Origin so i had to find a cracked exe and it worked fine.

no problems with any games. only issues I've had with 10 has to do with watching videos in full screen and not being able to access the video player controls while in full screen, but it doesn't happen with all videos.

Well, I'm still not getting windows 10, windows 8.1 end of life is 2023 (hmm thought I remembered it was 2024 before).
I'm happy with windows 8.1, it's stable and I'm used to it and it runs all my games perfectly.
If there would be a DX12 game in the near future i wanted to play, it has most likely an option to play it in DX11 as well.
I'm not a fan of automatic windows/driver updates in windows 10, that is holding me back. At least I have full control over my windows 8.1 system.

Thank you. This is the biggest reason why I haven't even tried it. Privacy is always a concern of mine and they really ramped up data collection in W10. I'll be sure to use this and spread the word.

For me, all my programs work better - including Office 2007. If it ran on my PC and notebook with W8.1, it runs at least as well (and typically better) with W10.

I would not let automatic updates hold you back. W10 is faster and more secure. Yes, there have been some issues but even when you manually install an update, things can happen. But when you look at the numbers (1.4 billion Windows systems worldwide, 110 million already upgraded to Windows 10) the number with problems is pretty much miniscule. And the majority of those have been with older hardware coming from W7. It is just that when the numbers are that big to start with, even the tiny proportion who are having problems can make a lot of noise - especially when that noise is amplified by the IT press seeking attention love to bash Microsoft with sensationalized headlines.

Honestly...if privacy was your biggest concern, you'd have stopped using Windows, PC's and the Internet in the 90s. Your privacy hasn't been private in decades, with computers, phones, services, memberships, etc. etc. etc...

But regardless, for those that worry, that application will be helpful to make the changes you need to feel more secure at least. It does its job quite well!

Yeah, and sadly I am aware of this. My understanding was that it really kicked off in W2K. As a professional in IT, an avid lover of technology, and a PC gamer in 2015, I am forced to walk a fine line between giving up some privacy or foregoing all of those things. I don't have much choice, especially as a hardcore gamer.

The data collection scare with W10 is really blown out of proportion by Microsoft bashers and that same IT press seeking headlines. Honestly, if worried about someone spying on you, smash your smart phone. They know where you've been, where you are (to within a few meters!!!!) and which direction you are heading. They know what stores you have visited and often know what product on the shelf you are standing next to.

Facebook scares me 100 time more than Microsoft! Even if you don't personally have an account, your friends and relatives could be sharing all sorts of stuff about you.

The point is that people want control

I hear you on that. And for sure, I used to be the same way - to the point of being totally anal about it.

But three factors have changed the circumstances. (1) Badguys got very prolific and clever. (2) Users have always been and will continue to be the weakest link in security. And (3) Microsoft always gets the blame in spite of the fact it is the badguys who did it, and "click happy" users who click on unsolicited links, downloads and attachments, and who fail to keep their systems updated and secured.

And because compromised computers are typically used against the rest of us as distributors of spam, malware or zombies in bot armies conducting DDoS attacks, Microsoft decided to be proactive instead of reactive when it comes to security. And I think that was the correct choice.

And like I say in my sig, Freedom is NOT free! I don't like it either! Especially when we used to have such control. No one likes to have something they had taken away. But sometimes that is the price we have to pay to be safe and free.
