I was taking a survey yesterday for AMD and one of the questions was whether or not I thought the "HD" in the name would make it sound too complicated or if it was necessary (I don't remember the exact wording of the question.)

FYI I marked as no, as I think the HD is rather useless and that simply "Radeon 5xxx" would be much simpler and to the point.

Also another question mentioned the name HD 5500 as a "hypothetical" name for a card.

I dunno..kinda too little too late, they brought it up, have now used it for a couple generations of products, it's already caught on to and understood...taking it away could lead to more confusion than keeping it for some out there. Plus it's nice to have HDxxx vs GTXxxx threads out and about. In the end as long as the product is good, they can all it and all it's derivatives whatever they want.

I was thinking that ATI added the HD in the first place to signal that the architecture changed to being unified but even then, I still didn't know for sure or cared.

The HD is actually a good marketing idea. It worked for me, it just sounded so... noble.

HD branding started with the 2900 series. And honestly don't find any value in the term. It shouldn't make that much of a difference if they drop it or not.

Nothing wrong with the HD, at least it doesn't have many varieties like GT, GTS, GSO, GTX....

well it's good for me if they keep the "HD" it's easier to understand when someone says HD4870 rather than 4870 same with GeForce GTX.
