I fear that the naming has thrown people off already. The 6800 is a MID-RANGE GPU. The GTS450,GTX460 is also mid-range. The 6800 is supposed to go against the gtx460/gtx470 not the gtx480 The 6900 will go against the gtx480.

the new naming would be something like this
5700=6800
5800=6900

the HD6970 will gang-rape the GTX480. anywayz, the HD6870 is only SLIGHTLY slower than the 5870, same for the 6850 and the HD5850, so no problem there

Judging by the performance of these card, i would suspect a fairly significant increase in performance over the 480's when it comes to the 6900 series. But of course, this is really just an assumption based on the performance of these 6800 series cards.
