Overheating!!!

Hey there, and welcome to TPU I have been reading this thread and i just wanted to see if i could help at all, i have had a X2 6400 at one stage, that i put in a m8s comp that i built for him, it was not the BE tho, im guessing the BE is less wattage model?

Anyway it came with the AMD copper 4 pip heatsink , with a 70mm fan on it, and it cooled it well enough, i noticed the cooler you have for it and looked it up , it seems to be good enough for it. Have you got the original cooler for it? as that one is a after market one isn't it? Also try to find out the fan speed of the cooler, just to make sure it is increasing in speed, since the new ones go off the temps of the mobo to increase fan speed when the CPU gets hot.

It is a bit odd that it is idled at such a high temp, that should be the temp it would run at when its at full load, it is idling right isn't? and not some program making it run at full load 24/7?

Also if you want it to run a bit cooler when its idling make sure you have cool and quiet turned on? so the CPU will run at as a guess 1GHz, this will drop temps by a good 10c, but wont help the temps when you are using the CPU under full load.

Hope you work it out i like the CPU, so i don't want to see it die.

Ahhh ok thanks Wile E, so its a Black edition then? The one i got for my m8s comp came in a small black case, no fan etc, and it was the Black edition. So i sent it back because i wanted one with a fan, and yea it just turned up in a standard box etc.

Well, if he has the 125w BE like me, his cooler is suspect to me. That's why if he is close, I'd offer to throw either his BE in my system, or his cooler in my system to check it out.

Other than that, I have a spare Opteron heatpipe cooler (that works very well with a stock BE) we could try on his system. I also have a Freezer64 Pro to try out. Tho I'd like to keep the Freezer.

Otherwise, he needs to make sure he has good airflow going in his case. The 80mm needs to be drawing in, and the 2 rear 60's need to be drawing out.

As for the side 60mm fan, it depends on where it's positioned. If it's directly above his cpu, I'd have it drawing in.

I'd also recommend a case that has better fan and airflow options, tbh. 60 and 80mm fans don't really cut it with today's high heat systems, especially if it's a 125w BE.

At least it has a copper base, so it shouldn't be to bad, but it should still run alot colder at idle, thats what isn't adding up.

i have a 8cm front fan, 6cm side fan, 2x 6cm back fans

The insides of the case Barely ever gets time to get dusty or anything, i do try keep a very clean pc

are you sure this fans create a proper airflow ? is possible that the cpu fan can't cool properly due your setup (i had similar problem after i put a 6 cm back fan and all my temps rised so i remove it and leaved the front one seems negative or no airflow was generated)

disconnect the side and back fans and watch your temps and test by re-connecting them one by one;you can also test the airflow with smoke to see what's going on

Nah, most mobos w/4pin PWM cpu headers can still control the cpu fan speed on 3pin fans. it's just not as finite. And thank you for reminding me, as that leads to my next suggestion.

@mc - Go into the BIOS, and look for your fan controls. Find your cpu fan controls, and set it to 100%.

TR2 line is a very basic heatsink, mainly for mass system builders etc.

After reading this thread, only two things I can think of which maybe an issue.
Surface of the H/S is not flat or just plain off.
Surface of the IHS of the CPU is concave.
Maybe both.

Definitely something to do with poor contact between the CPU IHS and HS

yes it idle'd temp readings. and using cool quiet, works ok, if i just want to look at my computer, lol, but any sign of cpu under load, the temps do get above the top end of the cpu 63 degrees temp limit, so tend to keep cool and quiet off, the temps are somewhat more stable without it on.

im located at Mansfild, Nottinghamshire, lol, if anyone does live near by with a similer set up i'd love to try mine on another HSF at least, i do still sustect the HSF or the thermal diode.

just took a look at what your HS/F looks like and im pretty sure that might be the problem. 6400+blk runs Hot and the ThermalTake TR2-M6 SE (K8) just doesnt cut it. Just go buy a better heatsink, one made of copper w/mulitple heat pipes and use either MX-2 or arctic silver 5. If that doesnt work just return it and RMA your CPU

Improvements!!!

Well, just an update to say i've stripped the HSF and they was alot more dust than i thought in their, but anyways, i clean it regulary! but my temps have dropped alot! at the moment the cpu is at 42, under 5minute stress test temps was 61 max, BUT i have took the cpu core voltage down to 1.350v, does anyone know if this will stay stable?

Hmmmm ok thats what i was wondering if the fan speed increased or not as the CPU got hotter, it should increase alot more over 2.500RPM it should get close to double that when the CPU gets close to 60c to keep the temps low. (Mine will get over 3500RPM when it gets hot)
But in saying that it still should have lower temps at idle at 2500RPM as thats what mine runs at and stays well below 30c, and the FX's run HOT. Even tho that cooler has a copper base, im thinking its not dispersing the heat well enough away from the CPU, and with the fan speed not increasing its just not having a hope in hell to get rid of the heat under load.
And like you said even with Cool and quiet on its still runs way to hot at idle, a bit odd that the temps seem more stable with it turned off tho =/, they should drop alot with it turned on, odd.
Id look into a different cooler, thats more suited to your mobo and that has the 4pin connector so the fan speed will increase and decrease with the heat of the CPU, or find a program or something to increase the fan speed on your current cooler and see what happens?

Yea 10% is stuff all and will not make much difference, thats still under 3000RPM, and you need higher fan speeds when under full load and the CPU gets hot.

Im not to sure on what program to use, but im using speedfan and i ticked the box for automatic fan speed, not even sure if its increasing the speed, but you can give it a try i guess? Otherwise look in your BIOS and turn it up in there possibly?

Ummm well it might work, if the fan screw holes will line up? or at least mod it some how to get it to attach to that cooler. I have never done it so i would only be guessing. Im not sure if the mobo will make it run at a lower speed then 6000RPM? but it might not, so that would help lol

Give it a go i guess, if that doesn't help, you will have to get a better heatsink that will draw the heat away from the CPU better.

WoW ok lol thats a funky looking heatsink and fan, i like it lol, looks like it would cool the old XP3200 down well

If you can mod it to work on your current system then yea im sure it would help and work alot better.

You might have a few problems with the bracket to attach it to the mobo, as its smaller far as i know? but see what you can do and work it out, and yea it might just work

I wouldn't even run one of them on my 5kBE and they run cool compared to a 6400BE
I too think it is the heatsink.

yeah its a fair bit smaller, but im thinking of modding both the socket A & the AM2 HSF clips, so it makes one, therfore should fit the gigabyte HSF and also the current bracket on my mobo. works in theory anyways...

i wish you luck. You have more balls then i do. I won't dare mode anything that holds the HSF onto my CPU because if something gives then cpu is dead... now i will mod a HSF for a GPU just not a CPU .
if you have to get a new cooler i recommend the Xigmatek 1283 or 1284 if it is out of your price range then a Freezer 64 pro would be a good choice

i've seen a couple of pc's with thier HSF's tied down by string, been some super fans on them, and never failed of what i know, but thats not something i'd even consider,lol. the main thing when i modd the retaining clip is making it strong enough, cause the gigabyte HSF has some real good weight with it.
