Which CPU Will Run Faster?

Right, the only reason I state my case is to save money. Heck, I make unecessary upgrades in the video card department way too much! Some people like myself are just too suckered into buying cool newer hardware.

Yeah I guess you are right on that I always want to max out what I have in the CPU area so this is why I opted for the Q9650 as well I can not go any higher than what I have now till I rebuild .

The only reason why I want to just upgrade my CPU to the Q9650 and my board to the 780i SLI FTW is to maximize what I got already. Just a little over a year ago all of my components in my rig were top quality components at the time. If I were to go the i7 or i5 route right now, I would want to totally build a brand new rig which includes the EVGA X58 Classified, an Intel Core i7 Extreme 965, Corsair Dominator GT 12GB (6x2GB) DDR3 RAM, an OCZ Vertex 120GB SSD, x2 EVGA GTX 295's in SLI, a Corsair HX1000W PSU, a whole brand new chassis and a custom extreme liquid cooling system. Call me dumb or a money waster, but that's just how I am, I like to go big. I know that one day that will be my downfall, but until that day comes, I will always go big. With that said, I think that a $700 CAD upgrade would be more reasonable than building a new rig and I'm totally happy with DDR2 right now and could care less about DDR3 at the moment.

So which CPU will run faster, my current Q6600 which is overclocked at 3.50GHz @ 1750MHz and has an 8MB cache or a stock QX9650 which is clocked at 3.00GHz @ 1333MHz and has a 12MB cache? I just want to know if it's worth getting the QX9650 in the long run.

Large cache doesnt mean much if one is 15% slower than the other and on 25% slower bus. Are you sure you will not OC that QX9650. Then it's not worth buy for 500 bucks.

Great, I hope you're happy with it. I know I was very pleased when I upgraded from the Q6600 to the Q9650, and when I upgraded from the 680i to the 780i. Of course, I did the two at different times, you are doing it all at once. Hopefully that means your experience will be even better.

I went from a Q6600 at 3.5 - 3.6ghz to a dual core E8600 at 4ghz and I consider it an upgrade for gaming..

i did the same, except to a xeon equivalent. my FPS is indeed higher, as games like high clocked duals more than they like quads.

the problem is that no matter how you look at it, the duals are cheaper, have higher multis, and far less heat output. If you can pull 4GHz off a quad, you'd be getting 4.3-4.4Ghz on a dual. You need to determine whats best for your situation.

So I just received my EVGA 780i SLI FTW Motherboard today and I'm still waiting for my Q9650. Just one question though, how good is the vdroop control on my board? I noticed on the description of my board at the EVGA website that the FTW has vdroop control. Will I still need to do the vdroop pencil mod on my board like the one for my previous 680i board? Because the 2 boards are almost identical in layout and it's been proven to work with the regular 780i board.

I don't know, I know the vDroop is pretty bad on my 780i, but I don't have the vDroop control "feature".

I would say jsut try running it stock at first, and if you aren't happy with it, then try a pencil mod.

EVGA can say anything, and make you buy a new board. At the end of the day, for 680i and 780i, the SPP are physically (near-)identical.

The problem is the revisions. The early revisions used for the 680i boards were 50/50 when it came to supporting quads at the 1333FSB boot strap, so it was easier for eVGA and most of the other manufacturers to just pull support for the processors. The 780i is obviously a newer revision that has no problem with the 1333FSB boot strap.

For anyone thinking of moving to a 45nm quad with one of the 6 series nVidia chipsets, you can try it on your board, but I wouldn't expect it to work. If it does, consider yourself lucky, and be happy. However, I would expect to have to replace the board. Expect the worst, then be happy if it doesn't happen.
