Hope this isn't a wasted post, as I cannot find the Windows 8 performance thread.

I stumbled across this claim elsewhere "NVidia uses the DX11.1 render path in Windows 8/8.1 which improves performance significantly, a long with the latest drivers.."

Anyone can give merit to that? I have been holding out on upgrading to Win 8 because did not see how it would have that much real world benefit in terms of performance.

Well idk if its win8 specific, but yeah that R337 and newer driver boost is true. Hitman Absolution saw the biggest boost, followed by Mantle StarSwarm Dx mode benchmark. both up to 25fps by min fps.

Also saw better fps in general by cpu bound games, same by older API dx9 and dx10, not just dx11.

    Im at win8.1.

hmm sounds like markets talk, but mostly true, as new drivers and new platforms tend mostly (cough cough vista) to be better/faster/more economic than the last gen, ...... so I guess should be better lol but i dont really know hehe :)

Windows 8.1 performs better than 7 for numerous reasons I would recommend upgrading from 7

    W8.1 + Start8

Nvidia released new drivers starting from R337.xx that optimized DX11 to reduce CPU overhead by using tiled resources, similar to how Mantle does things from what I understand. The performance improvements seem to be more prominent in CPU dependent games.

This was Nvidia's response to Mantle. They were able to get similar performance improvements just from drivers. They touted all about it at GDC earlier this year.

Until some independent tests, it is just PR, and win 8 faster/better than 7, well from my tests on same pc(modern pc), I come back to 7(on paper 8 look better than 7)...

I disagree, most if not all the games I played, CPU dependent or not, performance increased a bit to a lot depending on the game with the 337.xx drivers. One thing though, they touted ~60% boost in Total War: Rome II but most users on the Total War forums weren't seeing it.

Though is that under Win8 only, or just the drivers in general?

I heard it was a bit smoother in gaming applications however for desktop startup and use, I found it slower and less responsive than my Win 7 installs.

I guess my Windows 7 is tweaked pretty nice then :)

We'll see how I feel about 8.1 in a few months time.

You get used to it, I quite like 8.1 with no start too, not bothered.
