yes RPG is right in this instance, you need to make sure your fan is set at 100% when benchmarking your graphics card.

It sounds to me like you have a bad card, that's probably why it was returned before. To my knowledge, those are not stock settings... defaults should be 400|490 on Sapphire X800 GTO's. Manufact website says so, and I know cause I have one.

IMO RMA it, suck up the shipping costs and just order another, preferably new if you can swing it. Then we'll see about getting that sucker unlocked and OC'd proper. Good luck!

THanks for the advice! I just defraged my HD and it loads really really really quick... As for the RAM... I took a 512 stick from my dad's computer for a test, and it runs at full settings no problem! so if anybody has the same problems as me in BF2... I suggest taking RPG's advice and defrag your comp first.. and then get some ram!
i say thats the second

Yes, they are great for OCing vs R430. In the end R480's can usually match at least the same benchmarks of 16 pipe unlocked R430, if not surpass them. Get some good aftermarket cooling, (i.e. Zalman vf900-cu, AC Silencer 5 Rev.2) and you'll be set!

Are you sure the Vf-900CU is sufficient... looks pretty small to me... but again its copper :rockout:

Anyone else ever seen an X800 GTO with default settings at 390/350?
I cranked the fan up to 100 percent and was able to get the memory up to 384.75@70C before it artifacted and froze. Afterthat, I tried a few more times to up the core clock with 100% fan but I couldn't even get past 438.75 without it crashing.

Using the stock settings of 390/350 I played counterstrike for an hour and the temp was 55C. Idle at stock it is 49C. I'm going to uninstall the drivers and use catalyst 6.4 version. If it is still heating up and not overclocking, then it looks like I will be calling to RMA it tomorrow.

Yes such GTO exists (390/350MHz) but it is with 128MB DDR memory (like on 9800PRO - 2.8ns).

Lucky you to have R480. It means that you can overclock it (deppending on Vcore) to 500-600MHz. Flash with the moded BIOS "bios16.bin" to unlock the pipes and test for max. core/memory with ATITool.
If you can, please show me a picture of your card in order to prepare Automated flash Utility and to include the card in the flash instructions file. Please report your max. core and memory overclock after flashing to 16 pipes.

Use atiflash under DOS with the following command line:
atiflash -f -p -newbios 0 bios16.bin

Success

Wow, news to me. Thanks for the info dolf! If you want a good gaming card, I guess I would stay away from that one then.

Yes, DOLF is correct. My GTO card only has 128mb. So why would the 128mb versions have a crappier core than the 256 versions that are defaulted at 450/490mhz? I assumed when I ordered it that all the 430 cores would be the same and I would just have less memory to work with, but it looks like it is normal for the 128mb versions of the X800 GTO to have lower default core and memory speeds as well as less ram.

Does anyone have the 3Dmark scores of the stock 128mb GTO's when compared to the higher clocked and more memory stock 256mb GTO's? Looks like I now have a decision to make.

EDIT: In another post, Dolf commented that the 128 versions may use 2.8ns ram while the 256 versions use 2ns ram.

i dont but just to tell u, i suggest u get a 256 ddr3 one because they are clocked higher and use faster ram, ur games would be hindered by a 128 ddr if u play on higher settings.this is the card i have its on newegg for 150 with a 30$ rebate 6$ shipping... if ur lucky u can unlock and get clocked as high as me

you have the exact same fuses as me...! Sorry but you cant unlock it... but I overclocked my card (Sapphire X800GTO ULTIMATE PCI-e) to core:560 and mem:510 and it runs like a dream. I am currently playing Battlefield 2 on the highest possible settings, except AA4x and have used ATI Tray Tools to put the card's prefs on full quality as well... So dont be sad. BECAUSE IF YOU HAVE 1GB OF RAM, YOU WILL PWN :rockout: :rockout:

Agreed. If you have that kind of cash and want a good gaming card, it would be good investment for the price. Between the card you have and a 256MB DDR3 card you will see a significant increase in gaming performance. Also, I'm guessing that card is 128bit as well?? Most other GTO's are 256bit which is a plus as well.

What it really comes down to is what you want out of your card. Here's some advice: spend some time playing some games you own, try seeing how high you want your settings and if that works for you and you're happy great! If it's still not enough, then consider a different card, but don't just get a more expensive card for the sake of having a better card. Get what you need and will be happy with. :)

EDIT:
