According to the well-known hardware leaker @momomo_us, HP is preparing the launch of its next-generation Omen 17 gaming laptops. And with a new generation of chips coming to consumers, HP accidentally made some information about laptop SKUs public. Four models are listed, and they represent a combination of Intel's 13th-generation Raptor Lake mobile processors with NVIDIA's Ada Lovelace RTX 40 series graphics cards for the mobile/laptop sector. The four SKUs are: CM2007NQ/CM2005NQ with Core i7-13700HX & RTX 4060 8 GB; CM2001NQ with Core i7-13700HX & RTX 4070 8 GB; CK2007NQ/CK2004NQ with Core i7-13700HX & RTX 4080 12 GB; CK2001NQ with Core i7-13700HX & RTX 4090 16 GB.

The most exciting find here is the appearance of the xx90 series in the mobile/laptop form factor, which has not been the case before. The GeForce RTX 4090 laptop edition is supposedly equipped with 16 GB of VRAM, and the GPU SKU should be a cut-down version of AD102 GPU adjusted for power and clock constraints so it can run within a reasonable TDP. With NVIDIA seemingly giving its clients an RTX 4090 SKU option, we have to wait and see what the CUDA core counts are and how clocks scale in a more restricted laptop environment.

OMNIVISION, a leading global developer of semiconductor solutions, including advanced digital imaging, analog, and touch & display technology, today announced the OV08X, the industry's only 9.2 megapixel (MP) CMOS image sensor with pixel size at 0.7-micron, enabling 4K resolution in a 1/5.7-inch optical format. The OV08X can be used in the most stringent 4 mm y-dimension module laptops with 16:10 (1920x1200) aspect ratio monitors. LG's Intel based gram-series of notebooks have proven quite popular in the Ultrabook segment. However, its Ultra PC models are built around AMD hardware and although there have been a 13.3-inch model in the past, the company has announced its new 14- and 16-inch models. Both models are based around either a Ryzen 5 5625U or a Ryzen 7 5825U processor, which is built on AMD's Barcelo chips. This sadly means that features like USB4, DDR5/LPDDR5 and PCIe 4.0 support are out the window. This is because Barcelo is a refresh of Cezanne, which means both CPU families based on the Zen 3 architecture. On the plus side, this means the pricing will be quite competitive, but more on that in a second.

The 14-inch model measures 313.9 x 220.45 x 16.3 mm and weighs in at 1.29 kg, whereas the 16-inch model is slightly larger—for obvious reasons—and measures 356.3 x 248.6 x 16.3 mm, but remains fairly portable at 1.6 kg. The display on both the 14- and 16-inch models features 1920x1200 resolution, with the 14-inch model having a brighter display at 300 vs 250 nits for the 16-inch model. Neither display is what you'd call impressive though. Other features include up to 16 GB of dual-channel LPDDR4X memory, up to 1 TB of storage, HDMI out, a USB-C port with DP Alt mode and USB PD support, two USB-A ports, a microSD card slot, an audio jack and a power connector for the charger. WiFi 6 and Bluetooth 5.1, as well as a fingerprint reader are also part of the package. Battery life is said to be up 21 and 20 hours respectively when it comes to video playback, with the 14-inch model managing 16.5 hours in MobileMark 2018, whereas the 16-inch model only manages 15 hours flat. LG will offer a range of SKUs that start at €1,199 for the 14-inchers and €1,399 for the 16-inchers, all of which should be available at some point this month.

Intel's upcoming family of Arc Alchemist mobile graphics cards is just around the corner, and we are already starting to spot the company's reference systems utilizing the latest dedicated graphics. Thanks to the findings of @momomo_us, we have information that Intel is readying the NUC X15 laptop reference system codenamed "Alder Country." There are two SKUs, LAPAC71G and LAPAC71H, each with similar CPU and GPU configurations. Carrying an Intel Core i7-12700H processor with 14 cores and 20 threads, the CPU is paired with either Arc A550M on the LAPAC71G SKU or Arc A730M on LAPAC71H SKU.

As a reminder, Intel already made such NUC X15 reference laptop designs with Tiger Lake processors. However, they came with NVIDIA GeForce RTX 30 graphics instead of Intel Arc Alchemist. Implementations of NUC X15 appeared with partners such as ADATA XPG Xenia laptop. We could expect to see more OEMs adapt Alder Country if the performance of Arc Alchemist graphics proves good.

DeepComputing and Xcalibyte today opened pre-orders for the industry's first native RISC-V development laptop. The hotly anticipated ROMA development platform features an unannounced quad-core RISC-V processor with a companion NPU/GPU for the fastest, seamless RISC-V native software development available.

"Native RISC-V compile is a major milestone," said Mark Himelstein, Chief Technology Officer for RISC-V International. "The ROMA platform will benefit developers who want to test their software running natively on RISC-V. And it should be easy to transfer code developed on this platform to embedded systems."

ASUS today announced that ASUS Antibacterial Guard antibacterial protection is now protecting the widest ever range of ASUS laptops. Availability includes the majority of Vivobook models, including Vivobook, Vivobook Go, Vivobook S, S Flip, Pro and Pro X. This feature will be extended to cover selected Zenbook models, with the result that more than 8 out of 10 ASUS laptops sold will be protected by Antibacterial Guard.

According to a recent global survey of over 20,000 laptop users conducted by Pollfish and ASUS in March and April, 2022, laptop users are increasingly concerned with the hygiene of their work environment, especially in locations where a few coworkers work face-to-face. In the survey, 88% of prospective laptop purchasers expressed a positive interest in learning about antibacterial laptops, and 68% are interested in purchasing one.

Somewhat unexpectedly, there were a handful of exhibitors from the PRC at Computex and walking around the mostly empty show, we spotted a company called Wii Power (no relation to Nintendo) that had a range of rather interesting Gallium Nitride or GaN chargers on display. The headline product wasn't even the most interesting model on display, but at 340 W, it's by far the most powerful GaN based charger we've seen to date. Although it wasn't a final product based on the looks of the housing, it gives us some insight into what to expect from future laptop chargers. It's still a rather large power brick at 150 x 86 x 34 mm, but it can deliver 20 V at up to 17 A over the fixed power cable. In addition to that, it also has a USB-C port with support for USB PD and a range of other charging standards that can deliver up to 45 W.

The company showed off another charger that has a combined output of 240 W and the primary USB-C port supports revision 3.1 of the USB PD standard and can deliver 140 W on its own. The secondary USB-C port can deliver another 100 W, but what makes this product interesting outside of this, is that Wii Power offers an adapter that can combine both of these outputs into a single 240 W output for charging more demanding laptops. There's even a third USB-C port and a USB-A for peripheral or phone charging, although each port is limited to 30 W and the total output can never exceed 240 W. A built-in display shows the Voltage, Amperage and Wattage that's being put out. It's still rather chunky at 130 x 80 x 32 mm, but considering the power it can put out, it's more compact than most similar non GaN chargers. Finally the company had a compact USB PD 3.1 travel charger that can again deliver up to 140 W, which is the equivalent of 28 V at 5 A. We're not expecting to see any of these products in their current guise in retail, but it's a clear sign of what to expect in terms of future charging products.

Chinese company Machenike have recently launched the first gaming laptop to feature the new high-end Intel Arc A730M graphics card. The Machenike Discovery Edition 2022 gaming system features a 14-core Intel Core i7-12700H paired with an Arc A730M GPU and 16 GB of 4800 MHz DDR5 memory to power the 16" 1440p 165 Hz screen. The Machenike Discovery Edition 2022 is now available to pre-order in China with a limited starting price of 8499 RMB (1255 USD).

Acer today announced the Predator Helios 300 SpatialLabs Edition gaming laptop, bringing glasses-free, stereoscopic 3D to the world of gaming. Through the SpatialLabs TrueGame application, it will support over 50 popular games at launch, and support for additional titles will be added on a continuous basis moving forwards. Intel in March 2022 kicked off its ambitious campaign to grab a slice of the consumer graphics market, with its Arc "Alchemist" line of discrete GPUs, based on the Xe-HPG graphics architecture. The announcement mentioned an immediate availability of at least the entry-level Arc 3-series GPU models in notebooks generally available. These GPU models include the Arc A350M and Arc A370M. People on social media are beginning to ask Intel why these notebooks are nowhere in sight, and the company responded.

In response to one such query by a user, Intel Support stated that laptops with Arc will be available "by the end of the second quarter of 2022." This would put general availability in June 2022, two months from now. Interestingly, this hasn't stopped laptop manufacturers from raking in pre-orders, with the likes of the Acer Swift X and Samsung Galaxy Book2 Pro up for "grabs." You can "purchase" the Swift X, but shipping dates are stated to be as late as May 23 (now pushed to June 13).
