AMD Announces FSR 3.1, Improves Super Resolution Quality, Allows Frame Generation to Work with Other Upscaling Tech

AMD at GDC 2024 announced the FidelityFX Super Resolution 3.1 (FSR 3.1). While the original FSR 3.0 feature-set largely carries forward the super resolution upscaler from FSR 2.2, adding frame generation on top; the new FSR 3.1 adds several image quality improvements to the upscaler itself, improving image quality at every performance preset. Specifically, it improves the temporal stability of the output at rest and in movement, to reduce flickering and shimmering, or "fizziness" around objects in motion. The new upscaler also reduces ghosting, and better preserves detail.

Next up, is a rather important change in the way the frame generation technology works. AMD has decoupled FSR 3.1 frame generation from the upscaling tech, which allows frame generation to work with other upscaling solutions, such as DLSS or XeSS. The possibilities of such a decoupling are endless—have an RTX 30-series "Ampere" GPU that lacks DLSS 3 frame generation support? No worries, use DLSS 2 for the upscaling, and FSR 3.1 for the frame generation. AMD is also clumping its FidelityFX family of technologies into a new FidelityFX API that makes it easier for developers to debug, and paves the way for forward-compatibility with future versions of FSR. Lastly, FSR 3.1 supports Vulkan API, and the Microsoft Xbox GDK. AMD plans to release FSR 3.1 to developers through its GPUOpen platform in Q2-2024, and its first implementations on games are expected later this year. In the meantime, AMD implemented FSR 3.1 on "Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart," to showcase the new upscaler.

AMD Software Adrenalin 23.8.1 WHQL Released

AMD has released the latest Adrenalin 23.8.1 WHQL driver, bringing support for Immortals of Aveum game, as well as several fixes, including issues with high idle power when using multi-display setups with mixed high-resolutions and high refresh rate on Radeon RX 7000 series GPUs when variable refresh rate is enabled, issues with performance drop on DirectX 11 games on Radeon RX 5600 XT when AMD SmartAccess Memory is enabled, issues in Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart game with ray tracing and Dynamic Resolution Scaling enabled on some AMD graphics cards, issues in Starcraft II on Radeon RX 7000 series GPUs, corruption issues in Rocket League with Bloom set to off on certain AMD graphics cards, and performance drop on Radeon 700M series GPUs in various games.

Unfortunately, AMD still has not fixed issues with Baldur's Gate 3 with DirectX 11 API on Radeon RX 7000 series graphics cards. AMD also included an important notes section stating that the factory reset is still temporarily disabled as a precautionary measure due to isolated installation issues during PC upgrades, and AMD Cleanup Utility can be used as a temporary option.

Ratchet & Clank Patch Adds AMD Radeon Ray Tracing Support

The latest patch of "Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart" released on Wednesday, finally adds real time ray tracing support for AMD Radeon GPUs. Patch version v1.808.0.0 went live on Wednesday, which calls upon AMD Radeon users to have at least the one-off 23.10.23.03 drivers that AMD released specifically for the game. The company latest main-trunk driver remains the Adrenalin 23.7.2 WHQL, so you'll need the off-trunk driver to use ray tracing for now. "Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart" on PC leverages ray tracing for reflections, shadows, and ambient-occlusion. These toggles in the game's external setup program were grayed out on older AMD drivers.

AMD Releases Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart-specific Graphics Drivers

AMD just released a special version of its Adrenalin graphics drivers with specific optimization for "Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart." The company's recent 23.7.2 WHQL drivers lacked day-zero optimization for the game, which caused some controversy, especially given that real time ray tracing in the game wouldn't work. The one-off drivers carry the version number 23.10.23.03, and come with optimization for the game. They also address the application crash and driver timeout issues noticed when running the game with ray tracing and DSR enabled. Since these drivers are not a part of the main driver trunk of AMD Software, we will not be hosting them.

Intel Releases Arc GPU Graphics Drivers 101.4575 as a WHQL

Intel Graphics released the Arc GPU Graphics Drivers version 101.4575 that it originally released as a beta late last week, as a WHQL. What's interesting is that while the driver version number hasn't changed when compared to the 101.4575 beta drivers from last week, the new 101.4575 comes with a different change-log. It mentions Game On (day-one) optimization for "Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart," and "Remnant II," in addition to optimization for "Exoprimal" and "Jagged Alliance 3." that were announced last week. Besides this, the "fixed isses" and "known issues" lists between the beta and WHQL are identical.

Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart PC Version to Feature Ray-Traced Ambient Occlusion

Next week, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is launching on PC! Many of you have asked for details about the technologies used and system requirements. Today we are answering those questions, and on top of that, we have some exciting new feature announcements. To ensure a smooth dimension-hopping experience, our team implemented DirectStorage 1.2 in Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart on PC, including GPU decompression.

Richard van der Laan, Senior Lead Programmer at Nixxes Software, explains: "To enable quick loading and instant transition between dimensions, the game needs to be able to load assets quickly. DirectStorage ensures quick loading times, and GPU decompression is used at high graphics settings to stream assets in the background while playing. Traditionally, this decompression is handled by the CPU, but at a certain point, there is an advantage to letting the GPU handle this, as this enables a higher bandwidth for streaming assets from storage to the graphics card. We use this to quickly load high-quality textures and environments with a high level of detail."

More Games Get NVIDIA DLSS Support

Each week, we're bringing you news of the latest DLSS and ray tracing integrations in games and apps. Last week at COMPUTEX 2023, we announced that Ash Echoes, Honor of Kings: World, and Legend of Ymir will all launch with DLSS 3, and Party Animals with DLSS 2. And we celebrated the Early Access DLSS 3-enhanced release of Diablo IV, and the launch of System Shock with DLSS 2.

This week, Diablo IV launches for everyone worldwide, Tower of Fantasy has updated to DLSS 3, and Sony announced the July 26th release of Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, which will include DLSS 3, ray tracing, Reflex, and DLAA. Additionally, DLSS 2 is now available in Alone In The Dark Prologue, WILD HEARTS, and Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty, enabling GeForce RTX gamers to get the best possible performance and image quality in even more games.
