Touring NETGEAR at CES 2019: Wi-Fi 6 Takes Center Stage!

The gift that is CES keeps on giving! We go over the NETGEAR suite, and it was more of an entire floor, in this article with the company showing off their involvement in every networking sector imaginable- the professional environment, consumer and retail networking solutions, and smart home devices. Indeed, stepping off the elevator itself led to a hallway lined with Meural canvasses, which are very well built frames that have an integrated display to show off images of your choosing. This public hallway had generation 2.0 canvasses, with the new-for-CES generation 3.0 series inside the show room that encompasses four different frame options in two different sizes- the currently available 27" version, and the newer 21.5" size for those wanting something smaller.

Meural canvasses can be used in landscape or portrait configurations, and supports a library of over 30,000 curated art images at an optional membership cost of $49.95/year. The new generation is available from August 2019, with the new screens having a wider color gamut and a truer-to-life display, that was impressive. These are definitely for a niche audience, however, but I can appreciate NETGEAR wanting to provide more use cases for their networking solutions. The current Gen 2.0 27" canvas starts at $595 (dimensions with the frame are larger than 27"), and an optional pivoting stand with more display I/O options is an additional $49.95 for when you want to have your own images connected to it. For the rest of the tour, be sure to read past the break!

Qualcomm and New H3C Ship 802.11ax Enterprise Access Point

Today, at Mobile World Congress Shanghai, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., a subsidiary of Qualcomm Incorporated, and Tsinghua Unigroup Subsidiary New H3C (New H3C), announced the availability of the H3C WA6628, an 802.11ax enterprise grade Access Point (AP), based on Qualcomm Technologies' IPQ8078 802.11ax chipset. This new solution is designed to offer one of the fastest throughput rates for an enterprise AP, by supporting 12 stream channels that serve data to up to 1000 client devices simultaneously. The WA6628 is targeted to begin shipping to customers in September 2018.

Qualcomm Technologies' IPQ8078 chipset is based on a powerful networking platform that supports up to 10 Gigabits per second (Gbps) wide-area networks and up to 6 Gbps peak physical (PHY) layer rates on Wi-Fi. The WA6628 makes full use of IPQ8078 capabilities, with a 10G Ethernet port and built-in Bluetooth. WA6628 can improve wireless network transmission rates by at least three times more than the mainstream 11ac Wave 2 AP.

Taking Hold of Your Signal - Critical Flaw Discovered in WPA2 Wi-Fi Security

Researchers have recently discovered a critical flaw that affects all WPA2 protected Wi-Fi devices. This can't be remedied solely by user intervention, or password changes, or even by the usage of HTTPS website; this is a flaw with the core of WPA's protection scheme, and means that an attacker could intercept every single traffic data point that your device sends over Wi-Fi, including passwords, credit card details, images - the whole treasure trove. Adding insult to injury, it's even possible for attackers using this method to inject malware into your devices. The new attack method - dubbed KRACK for Key Reinstallation Attack - basically forces your device's encryption code to default to a known, plain-text all-zero decryption key, which is trivial for hackers to reuse.

Adding to the paranoia, this is basically a device and software-agnostic attack - it's effective against devices running Android, Linux, and OpenBSD, and to a lesser extent macOS and Windows, as well as MediaTek Linksys, and other types of devices. HTTPS isn't the best solution either, simply because some website's implementation of it isn't the best, and there are scripts (such as SSLScript) that can force a website to downgrade its connection to a simple HTTP link - which can then be infiltrated by the attacker.

D-Link Delivers Simplified High-Speed Whole Home Wi-Fi System

D-Link today announced two new whole-home Wi-Fi solutions, the Covr Wi-Fi System (DKT-883) and the Covr PowerLine Wi-Fi System (DHP-W732AV). The Covr Wi-Fi system is a simple, intelligent solution that uses a high-performance router and seamless extender to create a single network with ultra-fast speeds and reliable connectivity, to even the farthest reaches of a home. The Covr PowerLine Wi-Fi System (DHP-W732AV), one of the first whole-home Wi-Fi solutions to utilize PowerLine technology as a foundation, uses the existing home router and a set of adapters to create a full coverage solution.

While other mesh network solutions rely on multiple access points, D-Link's Covr Wi-Fi System uses a premium router as the backbone of the wireless network. The router provides the advanced features and speed needed to power bandwidth intensive activities like 4K streaming and gaming on multiple devices. Combined with seamless extenders to cover hard to reach areas, Covr delivers a Wi-Fi signal to all areas of the home including upstairs, basements and backyards.

Extricom 802.11ac Access Point Adds Gigabit Wireless Support to its WLAN Portfol

Extricom Ltd., the high-density enterprise wireless LAN (WLAN) solution provider that delivers seamless mobility with its patented Channel Blanket architecture, today announced immediate availability of the RP-23ac, a dual radio access point designed for the latest 802.11ac Wi-Fi standard. Unlike most vendors' 802.11ac access points which are crippled by a lack of non-overlapping 80 MHz channels in the 5GHz band, Extricom's RP-23ac can be deployed without requiring any adjustment to the channel plan, or reconfiguration of other APs, to deliver on the performance promise of 802.11ac.

It is Extricom's unique single-channel architecture that makes it possible to fully exploit the increased performance and efficiency of 802.11ac, which can only be realized by using 80MHz bonded channels. With Extricom's interference-free Channel Blanket, only one clear 80MHz channel is needed to blanket an entire facility with a full-featured 11ac wireless network. In contrast, just as 802.11n is rendered useless at 2.4 GHz by too few non-overlapping channels, multi-channel architectures face the same channel-planning nightmare for 802.11ac with 80MHz channels. Industry analysts agree the shortage of available 80MHz channels is a severe constraint, while the small gain from 802.11ac with 40MHz channels has no cost justification.

Linksys Launches Pro Series Wireless Access Point
