NVIDIA Ampere A100 GPU Gets Benchmark and Takes the Crown of the Fastest GPU in the World

When NVIDIA introduced its Ampere A100 GPU, it was said to be the company's fastest creation yet. However, we didn't know how fast the GPU exactly is. With the whopping 6912 CUDA cores, the GPU can pack all that on a 7 nm die with 54 billion transistors. Paired with 40 GB of super-fast HBM2E memory with a bandwidth of 1555 GB/s, the GPU is set to be a good performer. And how fast it exactly is you might wonder? Well, thanks to the Jules Urbach, the CEO of OTOY, a software developer and maker of OctaneRender software, we have the first benchmark of the Ampere A100 GPU.

Scoring 446 points in OctaneBench, a benchmark for OctaneRender, the Ampere GPU takes the crown of the world's fastest GPU. The GeForce RTX 2080 Ti GPU scores 302 points, which makes the A100 GPU up to 47.7% faster than Turing. However, the fastest Turing card found in the benchmark database is the Quadro RTX 8000, which scored 328 points, showing that Turing is still holding well. The result of Ampere A100 was running with RTX turned off, which could yield additional performance if RTX was turned on and that part of the silicon started working.

Khronos Group Releases Vulkan Ray Tracing

Today, The Khronos Group, an open consortium of industry-leading companies creating advanced interoperability standards, announces the ratification and public release of the Vulkan Ray Tracing provisional extensions, creating the industry's first open, cross-vendor, cross-platform standard for ray tracing acceleration. Primarily focused on meeting desktop market demand for both real-time and offline rendering, the release of Vulkan Ray Tracing as provisional extensions enables the developer community to provide feedback before the specifications are finalized. Comments and feedback will be collected through the Vulkan GitHub Issues Tracker and Khronos Developer Slack. Developers are also encouraged to share comments with their preferred hardware vendors. The specifications are available today on the Vulkan Registry.

Ray tracing is a rendering technique that realistically simulates how light rays intersect and interact with scene geometry, materials, and light sources to generate photorealistic imagery. It is widely used for film and other production rendering and is beginning to be practical for real-time applications and games. Vulkan Ray Tracing seamlessly integrates a coherent ray tracing framework into the Vulkan API, enabling a flexible merging of rasterization and ray tracing acceleration. Vulkan Ray Tracing is designed to be hardware agnostic and so can be accelerated on both existing GPU compute and dedicated ray tracing cores if available.

AMD Supercomputer To Deliver Next-Gen Games and Applications Entirely via Cloud

Today at CES, AMD President and Chief Executive Officer Dirk Meyer and OTOY Chief Executive Officer Jules Urbach unveiled a plan to revolutionize the deployment, development and delivery of HD content through the "AMD Fusion Render Cloud", a massively-parallel supercomputer. The announcement took place during AMD's Industry Insider Series keynote at the Las Vegas Hilton Theater, where AMD was joined on stage by industry luminaries such as Lucasfilm, Dell, HP and Electronic Arts.

"AMD has a long track record in the supercomputing world. Seven out of 10 of the world's fastest machines, including the fastest two computers on the planet, are powered by AMD hardware," said Meyer. "Today, AMD is pleased to announce a new kind of supercomputer unlike any other ever built. It is being designed to break the one petaFLOPS barrier, and to process a million compute threads across more than 1,000 graphics processors. We anticipate it to be the fastest graphics supercomputer ever. And it will be powered by OTOY's software for a singular purpose: to make HD cloud computing a reality. We plan to have this system ready by the second half of 2009."
