Value and Conclusion

  • The 2 GB kit of Aeneon DDR3 sells for just under 200€.
  • What you see is what you can run at default voltage
  • Good for boards which cannot change memory voltage
  • Plenty of room up to 1500 MHz CL8-8-8-24 at 2.0V
  • Runs 1333 MHz at 1.5V with ease
  • Lifetime warranty
  • Black headspreaders look sleek
  • Blue PCB
  • Price/Performance ratio when compared to DDR2
  • Standard CL latencies programmed into SPD
  • No real world gain when compared to DDR2
  • Other brands run at CL6 at same speed and price range
The Aeneon DDR3 1333 MHz Kit is an interesting entry point for the new memory format for Aeneon. As is the case with DDR3 at such low speeds in combination with high CL latency, there is no real gain in performance when compared to high speed, low latency DDR2 kits. The company is trying to establish their X-Tunes brand as a valid choice to the enthusiast. While it may be of interest for the newcomer, the die hard enthusiasts will notice the differences to other brands right away. The standard CL rating programmed into the SPD shows a certain lack of tweaking of the memory, while the wrong label may make some wonder about the quality of the product. Overall the memory performs as advertised and does have quite a bit of headroom. Our sample managed 1500 MHz at CL8, but you may go for their higher speed kit instead if your budget allows. The upside of their rating is the fact that the memory is designed to run with default voltage at the rated speed, so this memory is certainly of interest for budget mainboards with DDR3 in the future. This is one attribute all other manufacturers of enthusiast memory lack and this also makes it the one of a very few choices on the market today.
