Benchmarking

Benchmarking for reviewers can be a tedious and very time consuming job. Oftentimes reviewers use a variety of tools to gain those FPS or scores including pre-made benchmark applications like those from Futuremark. Using in game benchmarks like the one in FEAR or running FRAPS. A popular tool called Benchemall, automated this process for reviewers and everyone alike. For this review we're going to use a new tool which also automates the process of benchmarking.

  • Fully automated benchmarking and harvesting of results
  • Easy script-based interface
  • Plugins for industry-standard benchmarks available.
TPUBench works only on 32-bit Windows 2000/XP/2003.

First after downloading and installation you can extract the plug-ins you wish to use by selecting File | Plug-in Manager and check the boxes of the benchmarks you want to use. After you've installed the plug-ins you can now add the scripts to run the benchmarks by selecting Edit | Append Sample Run.

Once the selected benchmarks are added to the script page you'll need to verify the file location of the benchmarks. You can also set the resolution and or AA, AF if you so desire, as well as the number of times you wish the benchmark to run; of course this is benchmark dependent. After a batch run you can use the drop down to remove script for benchmarks or add ones by checking or un-checking the benchmark. You can also save batch runs by selecting File | Save and open saved scripts to run at a future date.

To execute the scripts and start the benchmarks you just select RUN. Each benchmark plug-in has an HTML document that gives a description, requirements and sample script that the plug-in uses. After you completed your benchmarks TPUBench marks the date the benchmarks were run and the scores. All of which can also be saved to file. TPUBench is easy to use and simplifies the benchmarking process and for those who know code there is a plug-in developers section for those who wish to create their own plug-ins.
