Value and Conclusion

  • The OCZ Trion 150 480 GB is currently available online for $130.
  • Outstanding price/performance
  • Incredible price-per-GB
  • Good performance increase over the Trion 100
  • 3 year OCZ ShieldPlus warranty
  • 7 mm thin—ultrabook compatible
  • Lower performance than higher-end MLC SSDs
OCZ's Trion 150 is the company's second iteration of an SSD based on triple-layer-cell flash, which is more economic, but comes with lower write performance than the MLC chips used on the company's previous SSDs.
Compared to the Trion 100, the Trion 150 is a solid 10% faster in our real-life tests, which is a significant improvement. What's also fixed is the write-stall in our WinRAR compression test that caused system sluggishness. Compared to competing drives, the Trion 150 is slightly faster than the aging SandForce SSDs, which also means that the fastest drives in our test group are up to 8% faster than the Trion 150, something that will not be readily noticeable in day-to-day work, but relevant for power users and gamers. When compared to the Crucial BX200, which seems to be OCZ's main competitor, performance is similar as one or the other SSD wins depending on the test's workload.

The major selling point of the Trion 150 is definitely its price. With only $130 for the tested 480 GB version, the drive breaks through the 30-cents-per-GB barrier and reaches an amazing 27 cents per gigabyte, which is the lowest price we've seen in this performance segment and matches that of the Crucial BX200 exactly. What I would currently recommend to nearly every user is the Crucial MX200. It's only $160 for the 500 GB version, a reasonable increase for which you get higher performance without having to deal with TLC flash.

For a mom-and-pop office and Internet computer, the Trion 150 is a great option, though, as it will definitely provide the amazing HDD-to-SSD upgrade experience at an extremely competitive price point. OCZ's three-year ShieldPlus warranty comes with advanced shipping, which will help you with quickly getting your system up and running again should a drive failure occur.
