Value and Conclusion

  • The Corsair GS800 retails for $129.99.
  • Good voltage regulation at +12V
  • Efficiency that reaches 86% with 50% load, although the PSU is only 80PLUS certified
  • Handles full power flawlessly at 50 °C ambient
  • Excellent ripple suppression at 3.3V and good enough at +12V and 5V
  • Performed great in Turn-On Transient tests
  • Switchable LED lighting
  • A little stiff price
  • 3.3V rail registered high voltage drops in Advanced Transient Response tests
  • Loose voltage regulation at 3.3V (but still <5% limit)
  • Fairly low efficiency at loads below 70 W
  • Only one EPS connector
The Corsair GS800 exhibited fairly good overall performance in all tests except the Advanced Transient ones where the 3.3V rail registered high voltage drops. On the contrary during the same tests we saw excellent performance from the +12V line, which is the most significant rail in a contemporary system. Also voltage regulation of all rails was within 5% while +12V stayed within 2%. Also ripple/noise suppression was quite satisfying for +12V/5V and excellent for 3.3V.

Overall the GS800 is a good PSU that manages to perform well for its category, even though it does not exhibit world record performance in any field. With 800W capacity it will easily power a strong system with two graphics cards installed. On top of that the fan with the tri-color LEDs is a nice addition for gamers using fancy rigs with a side window, to show the lighting effect.

Even though it is targeted at the value oriented gamer, the current pricing of $129.99 seems a bit high to me. At the same price you can get the Corsair TX850 V2 which offers 50 Watts more and has 80PLUS Bronze efficiency. However, if Corsair can bring down the price of the GS800 to $110 or below they will clearly have a winner on their hands, and I would happily recommend it to anyone.
