performance difference from 880gts(g92) to gtx280/260

Q9650 should almost double the CPU score of the E8600, i had an E8400 @3.9Ghz scored around 3600, my Q8200, at 2.4Ghz score the same amount. and at 3.3Ghz scored 4600(3dmark06 that is)

Not in vantage, at least not w/ PhysX. Remember w/ physX there is really only 1 cpu test, the other "cpu" test is gpu dependent. It's hard to say for sure, but maybe 1000 points overall gain maybe, and that's a big maybe.

so my e8600 at 5ghz would get about...? and a q9650 at 4.6ghz?

Probably around what cold got w/ his q6700 (a bit higher probably) and live or die got w/ his e8500 (again, a bit higher, neither were oc'd much). A tad over 15k for both I'd say.

so im wasting my time on a single gtx280 if i expect to get anywhere close to what my 4870x2 does?

I mean how into it are you going to get? If your just going to do regular oc'ing they yeah the 280 is no match. But if you can vmod it, put it on heavy cooling (water/phase/ect) and tweak other settings to squeeze out every last point you could probably come close. You will have physX working in your favor w/ the 280. You could probably get your 4870x2 score, you'll just need to push it harder. What's the point really though, except for pure shits and giggles.

i use ati+nvda to get around that pesky problem. i use extreme cooling yes but not on video cards.

Did you have the gts in your 16k x2 score? And yeah, you'll need extreme cooling on the graphics cards if your really wanting to push the scores in vantage, cpu doesn't do much.

For synthetics? Probably.

It's single vs dual core GPU, what do you expect? But if the X2 does or doesn't scale well sometimes, that's not your fault or doing.

I run some tests later in the week with my GTX280SC, but i had the 2 8800gts 512's, have a few of hte 3870x2's, had the 4870X2 , had the 8800gt's, the ultra's and I just like the feel of the GTX280, I like it for 2 reasons.

It just seems to handlem my games better and i am an old fasioned guy, I like 1 gpu solutions if I get the chance to have them, that is why I sold the 4870X2, i had to make the decision and the GTX280 was just a better fit for me.

But I think the best bang for the buck out there right now is the 3870X2, it's a killer card, will do 20k 3DF06 with a good Q6600 and rocks most games.

I was a little different, I like games and my biz requires horsepower and stability. so Those were my requirments.

But now I am getting into a little benching and we'll see how the different combinations work and what scores i can rate,. I will run some vantage, 01, 03 05, 06 with my new GIG board, it seems like it just begs to be pushed and played with....

that is just my gut, not much graphs or charts to make my point, but I know what i like.

that looks like some nice scores Fit,. it will be interesting to see the same setup with my 3870X2.

I also want a E8600 for testing, I want to hit 5G, Woot!
