I think he believes that it unlocks SPs, he might be mistaken that this will affect any sort of gaming performance.

Um.. yeah old news.

Not only is SP not doing anything for gaming (yet?) but 8.12 also F****d up many peoples crossfire installs.

Well many people believes , that 8.11 was "the stable driver " so they stay at it , at the cost of loosing futures that they have pay for .

And i believe , that this futures should be there from the day one ... ( Drivers level )

I do not know what the gain are at hand , but still why to not have it !!

Even i had downgrade to 8.11 " because was certified " = more stable
Now i will move up to 8.12 , because now i have a good reason .

you do realize that omega takes ati catalyst, changes some things around and releases the drivers without ever writing a single line of code?

that instantly unlocks new ATI Stream acceleration capabilities

since 8.12+ ati ships a new computation dll that can run on multigpu. ie. folding runs on two cores instead of one now on r700. the performance gain is about +75%. this means that with the new unlocked capabilities the 4870 x2 has 3300 PPD in folding, the 9600 GSO has 3505.

I must say that 8.11 is more stable than the 8.12.
I own a powercolor HD 3650 (OC'd).

with 8.12 i have gained some extra fps's but it isn't as stable as 8.11 before.
e.g. I get sometimes bluescreen after booting from Stand-By mod.

oohh, i just see that 9.1 is out :roll:

I know I'm not going back to 8.12 due to the disastrous problems I had with them. Messages like," Incompatible Display driver" with the first version of 8.12, same error message with the 2nd hotfix 8.12 drivers, and then all seemed fine with the 3rd hotfix 8.12 drivers, til I started play Far Cry 2(random dots on the corners of the screen)...this is all on my 3870X2 crossfire setup. yeah, the 9.1 cats suck a little performance wise to the 8.11's but atleast they work for me.

For my 4850's and 4870's, the best drivers were either the 8.6 4800 series hotfix or 8.8. 8.7s didn't do much, and after 8.8 ATI started messing with the BIOS so you couldn't change voltages a certain way and made changing the Overdrive values cause the cards to act weird/not work. I think ATI/AMD had the chance to take over as the superior GPU manufacturer, but then kind of pulled a Microsoft and released a product well before it was ready for main stream. The 4k series of cards is very powerful and capable, but they seem to have problems with temps. Then needing a specific hotfix to allow 2 cards to run crossfire, personally just became too much for me to deal with.

Yeah, if you didn't know the 3xxx cards don't get any change with 8.12's so it won't matter much in your case.

Cat 8.12 was just an "Technology unlock driver" for ATI Stream

ATI Stream Technology is much like NVIDIAs CUDA Technology

btw i had NO problems whatsoever with 8.12 and my 4870 card

I use 8.12 personally, and I have a 4850 which is not officially supported by these drivers. It runs faster than 9.1, and as far as I am concerned, that's good enough for me.
