So they are going to finally make the cards perform so everyone doesn't sell their 5 cards to get a Fermi?

I just am surprised at the lack of the 5 cards doing either same, or a few times, worse than some 4 series cards. Hardware Canucks showed my 4870x2 being faster in FC2 small ranch than a 5870. So, a crossfire card faster than a single GPU of same SP count? Figure that one out.

I have to disagree with that statement mastrdrver. Look at my System Specs. I went from a 4 series to a 5 and the difference is pretty noticeable in the games I've tried so far:
Crysis Warhead
Far Cry 2
NFS Shift
Empire Total War
Borderlands
Dirt 2
etc all showed much improved performance.

well some games scale well with multi gpus example far cry may very well NOT use the full 1600 shaders etc of a 5870 it may well not even use the full power the card has where as the 4870x2 has been around a long while its drivers mature not to mention its 2 gpus example 2 8800gtx cards can hang in there with a gtx 280 and there a according to nvidia 2 gens apart my point being is its a single gpu card drawing 180 watts of power give or take compare that to a the 4870x2 which we all know is a friggin power guzzling mofo sure it may win out in some benchs but to do it it makes poor ethiopian ppl starve to do so

Some reviews I'm looking at don't show that to be true. Oh well, just enjoy your video card.

As far as a performance gain this month I don't think we will see much. This month there are some good features coming out from what I have heard. But mostly I think it will be just working a stability this month.
Although...... I do think that in the coming months we will see some nice performance gains! Hopefully in single card setup's Like mine. But I don't think so. We will probably see some in single card set up's but probably mostly in Crossfire.

Although I still think the 5870 has a lot of hidden performance in it. One feature I would like to see
them work on is the Frame Rate drops that happen in some games.

I would but I think its on the fritz. :(

Trying to wait out until taxes to get a 5870.

Since a lot of the reviews were done on the first drivers, it would be nice to see someone redo one with current drivers to see the changes.

edit: I realized some time ago that I got one of the better cards according to core overclocking ability. Using Riva Tuner, I can push to 810 stable on both cores without a voltage increase. I've always ran 800 (CCC max core) since I got the card and I've never had problems. I can push the memory to 950 no problem and 975 depending on the game but I've notice little improvement compared to core.

How can you make that statement... you don't even own the card. I own two of them (5870s) and your asessment is baseless/wrong. .... and I have owned 4850s, 70s and 90s (all in Xfire).

Like I stated that it was off reviews though I've read a lot of people who have gone from two 4870s (4870x2) to a 5870 and noted similar performance and better AA performance. Either way, I'm going to get a 5870 as I think my x2 is on the fritz.

Mostly, my original post was just a joke though I still think there is performance lacking from the 5 series cards, when compared to similar 4 series cards. Only time will tell though.

A 5870 is an nice improvement over a 4870. A 5970 compares pretty well against a 4870x2.

exactly. going from my 4870x2 to my 5970 was a good leap (equal to my x1950xtx xfire>3870x2 or my 3870x2>4870x2 jump) - performance jumps as expected but with the 5970 im running a lot cooler.

im looking forward to what the 10.x drivers bring - it's been a while since we had significant feature additions to the CCC so we are due some now (multi-threaded rendering in part of the driver in the 8.12s was the last major addition i noticed) :)

Last generation till now I owned a HIS HD 4850, a HIS HD 4890, and a EVGA GTX 285 FTW. Non of them held a candle to my Diamond ATI HD 5870.
The visuals seem to be cleaner. The game play seems to be smoother. Also I am getting increased Frame Rates across the board. Not to mention my Futuremark score went up along with the fact @ 1680x1050 there isn't one game i can't play at high settings with ?xAA on.

I think the 5870 is a huge increase over last gen. Sure it might be the same architecture( a little modified) so that ATI could get the first DX11 card out. But it is still a huge difference between last gen and this gen.

As far as the 5870 doing less than a 4870x2. It all depends on who's stats you look at. Some show the 5870 a head. At any rate you have to remember that these are still early drivers with this card. Also that last gen was very powerful.... and to almost double your performance from the 4800 gen to the 5800 gen in just over a year is very impressive.

I can't wait to see the crazy performance of the 6800 series! I'm sure it will be just stupid insane performance gains! Ahh forget that I'll even go earlier...... I can't wait for the 5870 refresh the 5890. That should be a amazing as well!

BTW random pic of my new inards..... i5 750 @3.4 and EVGA P55 LE mob along with G.Skill Ripsaw RAM @1600MHZ. I need to redo the cable managment a little bit but I just want to show this off too.....

Your HD4870X2 is clocked higher... thats the plain and simple reason. You should be happy ATI decided to clock the HD4870X2 so high.
