The HD800s created quite a fuzz when released, not only were they one of the most expensive headphones launched last year, they were also the most anticipated ones. In this review we put them to the test and see if there can be a reason to spend $1800 on headphones.

Could never spent that much on headphones.

I'd rather buy a £50 quid pair then give the rest to charity if I was given the choice of that or these as an option in a prize or something : /


After all the giving that much to charity will make me feel far better then some fancy headphones.

I would rather buy a new rig with that money. I must admit though, a good pair of earphones sound heavenly but you don't need to get such high end ones, a £50-£100 pair of cans is probably the most efficient for price IMO.

those are supposed to be top of the line cans, but you can get a set that sound even better for under $1000. and if you are thrifty you can buy a lightly used set of awesome cans for dirt cheap.

btw, in the final review section, is expensive supposed to be on there twice?

Yea i think so, Just look at that price tag, i nearly spat out my food when i saw that price, thats just INSANE!!!! I would of wrote expensive twice aswell lol

Ill stick with my $15 Big W specials, still working fine 3yrs later.

well remember that some people are audiophiles and enjoy top end cans such as these. they would rather spend $1400 on them then say a new rig. to each their own i guess.

my point is that unless you are insane or rich you can buy these types of high end cans for half the price if you look around.

But honestly the only time you could wear these is indoors, and at that price it surely be better to get some epic speakers which sound better IMO and you can "feel" the bass if your into that sorta thing D:

ive always wanted these but i can get over the price. I dont know, maybe its just me but i would think that ~$1500 headphones should be all metal...or wood and metal, the fact that theres plastic everywhere just turns me off.

Then I read the review before I replied...

I literally choked on my juice. I dunno if I missed it ayt the beginning or what, but when it was kinda off-handed remark

Still, the general design of the HD800s is a bit dull, and somewhat unworthy of a $1400 set of headphones.

WTF!!! I'd drop $750 on a set of amazing cans. No problem. But $1400 is too much for me, and I use $30 soap.

It really is a big price to pay, but when you think about the quality you get and how much this same level of quality would cost for a speaker setup, well.... it's kind of "inexpensive" in the end.

I just know if I had these headphones it would be such a huge waste of money. I bet they would break in my hands,lol I can see it now"OMG NO MY MONEY!!!!" plus if I bought a pair of 1400 headphones I just wouldnt use them

If they sound that good they are worth it. The new Polks I bought last year sound as good at midrange and high end staging as a set of really good phones, they fall flat on bass, but they are not made for that.

Senn has a great quality and user support, I wouldn't worry about that.
This is the main reason I dropped the idea of buying the Grado PS-1000, I live in Brazil, warranty would be just a pain, not to mention 60% duties and the month or more it takes to get things here.

audiophile headphones are a hobby for some just like high-end PCs are for most on this forum. There are some here with double or triple SLI GTX290 which costs more than these headphones. Someone just as easily say "damn $2000 for graphics cards, I am happy with my $100 4850 graphics card, that is insane....".

I case anyone is curious about the insanity/passion that is high-end audiophile headphones check out this guys setup. Probably $5000 worth of headphones there.

The one nice thing about high-end headphones is that a good sounding headphone will still sound good 20years later. Who can say they will enjoy using $2000 worth of graphics cards 20years later?!?

I agree. I am happy with my Stax Lamdba/SR303/SRM1-mk2, AKG K1000, and Senheiser HD580. I am much more interested in picking up an AKG K702 or Audio Technica AD700.

Learn to do that with speakers and you can get insane quality speakers for $1400.

Hell even paying a friend who can do it $100 to make up a pair you get much better, the performance vs buying prebuilt is phenomenal.

5 grand, you are being conservative.....

Good point about sounding as good as 20 years later, a pc just craps 5 years later.
Not to mention price can go even higher or in the worst case, be half of it new when you bought it. PC parts goes for free 5 years later.

Not really, at this level o SQ, these companies have a lot of tech and parts that they won't sell to the market.
And also, building a pc would be more like choosing the right hardware to build a sound system. Making a new GPU yourself would be more like designing a new headphone driver. Creating the PCB layout and power project of a VGA would be more like creating the headphone itself.....
